Nuno Espirito Santo’s West Ham United are going to come face to face with fellow Premier League and London-based side Brentford, who are currently led by their Irish Head Coach, Keith Andrews, in the Fifth Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup. The Hammers will be looking to emerge victorious against the Bees so that they can take a step closer to reaching the Final of this competition at Wembley in May 2026.
And, as of the time of writing, West Ham have so far won the FA Cup on a total of three occasions, having done so back in the 1963/64, 1974/75, and most recently back in the 1979/80 season.
Their first win in the 1964 Final saw them beat Preston North End through the likes of John Sessions (11’), Geoff Hurst (52’), and Ronnie Boyce (90’), whilst Doug Holden (10’) and Alex Dawson (40’) both scored for Preston. This triumph for West Ham came from a run to the Final that included victories against the likes of Charlton Athletic (3 – 0), Leyton Orient (3 – 0, Replay), Swindon Town (3 – 1), Burnley (3 – 2), and then Manchester United who they beat 3 – 1 in the Semi Finals.
For their 1975 FA Cup triumph, West Ham United defeated Fulham 2 – 0 following goals from Alan Taylor, who got a brace in this game (60’, 64’). This run to that season’s final, including triumphs against Southampton (2 – 1), Swindon Town (2 – 1, Replay), Queens Park Rangers (2 – 1), Arsenal (2 – 0), and then Ipswich Town in the replay of the semi-finals, where they won 2 – 1 at Stamford Bridge.
Finally, their most recent FA Cup Final triumph back in 1980 was a game against Arsenal, whom they were able to beat 1 – 0 with a goal early on, with club legend Trevor Brooking scoring the winning goal early in the first half (13’).
The run to their triumphant FA Cup Final success in 1980, West Ham had beaten West Brom (2 – 1, Replay), Leyton Orient (3 – 2), Swansea City (2 – 0), Aston Villa (1 – 0), and finally Everton, who they beat 2 – 1 at extra time in a replay.
Fast forward to West Ham’s 2025/26 FA Cup campaign, they began in the Third Round, where they went toe to toe with Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers. Nuno’s Hammers side were able to beat second-tier QPR with a 2 – 1 victory thanks to the goals of Crysencio Summerville (45+10’) and Valentin Castellanos (98’), whilst it was Richard Kone who got the sole goal for the visiting Rs side midway through the second half in this game (65’).
Then, in the Fourth Round, victory against League One outfit Burton Albion away at the Pirelli Stadium sent the Hammers through to the fifth round against Brentford. Nuno’s side managed to beat the Brewers 1 – 0 away from home thanks to a winning goal from the aforementioned Crysencio Summerville (95’) in extra time.
Moving on to Brentford, they are yet to win the FA Cup, and they could make history this season by reaching the final for what would be the first time.
The furthest that Brentford have progressed into this iconic and historic competition is currently the Quarter Finals, which they have reached three times in the history of the FA Cup, most recently against Liverpool who were able to beat the Bees comfortably 4 – 0.
In the 2025/26 FA Cup, Brentford began their run in this season’s competition with a third-round tie against Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday, back in January, beating them 2 – 0 through Keane Lewis-Potter (27’) and Mathias Jensen (64’ – Penalty), with the match played at the home of the Owls, Hillsborough.
Then in the Fourth Round, Brentford earned their fifth round tie against fellow London and Premier League Club West Ham with a 1 – 0 victory away from home against Macclesfield Town of the sixth tier of English Football, who were the lowest-ranked side left in the competition. The winning goal came following an own goal from Macclesfield defender Sam Heathcote later on in the second half (70’).
The last time that West Ham and Brentford met in the FA Cup was back on 7th January 2023 in the 3rd Round of the 2022/23 season’s competition at the Gtech Community Stadium. It was a 1 – 0 triumph for West Ham United on this occasion, who were able to score the winning goal through Algeria international forward Said Benrahma in the latter stages of the second half (79’).
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Fifth Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned London Stadium, with the Hammers looking to win some silverware this season.
