David Moyes’ West Ham are set to face Brighton once again at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Both clubs will hold ambitions of European qualification and both teams will also be participating in the UEFA Europa League this season. The Hammers qualified for the competition after beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1 in the final in Prague. Saïd Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’) scored the goals for Moyes’ side that day.
Moyes was the manager to lead the Hammers to their first European trophy since winning the European Cup Winners Cup all the way back in 1965 under the stewardship of then-manager Ron Greenwood. In 1965, Greenwood’s Hammers beat German side 1860 Munich 2-0 thanks to two Alan Sealey goals (70’ & 72’).
West Ham finished in 14th place in the Premier League last season (2022/23), accumulating a total of 40 points in their 38 matches. Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading Premier League goal scorers last season with 6 goals each. Michail Antonio got 5 goals whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá both got 4 goals.
On 29th December 2019, David Moyes officially succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as West Ham United Head Coach, with Moyes currently enjoying his second tenure at the London Stadium. By the conclusion of his first season (2019/20), the Scot had guided the club to a 16th place finish in the Premier League with 39 points with a margin of 5 points separating Moyes’ Hammers and the relegation zone.
The following season was considerably more positive (2020/21), with the club finishing in 6th place with 65 points – a club record for West Ham United. This saw them qualify for the UEFA Europa League, where they went on to reach the Semi-Final the following season, losing 3-1 on aggregate against German club Eintracht Frankfurt and finishing 7th in the Premier League (2021/22). They of course went on to win the Europa Conference last season, finishing 14th in the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi was announced as Graham Potter’s successor at Brighton after the English Head Coach left for Chelsea in September 2022. De Zerbi managed to build on the foundations left behind by Potter, leading them to an impressive 6th place finish which saw them qualify for the UEFA Europa League. This was the very first time that the Seagulls had qualified for European football for the first time in their more than 120 year history.
Alexis Mac Allister (now playing for Liverpool) was the club leading goal scorer with 10 goals with Pascal Gross close behind with 9 goals to his name. Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma and Leandro Trossard (now playing for Arsenal) all got 7 goals each.
West Ham United and Brighton played against each other for the first time in a competitive fixture on 17th October 1903. Out of their 59 meetings as of the time of writing, Brighton have won 21 of these matches in comparison to the Hammers’ 18. There have been 20 draws between these two clubs to date.
The most recent match between these two teams took place on 4th March 2023 in the Premier League at the Amex Stadium, losing 4-0.
