West Ham United are set to welcome Merseyside counterparts Everton to the London Stadium once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. David Moyes’ Hammers side will be looking to return to the European conversation this season, whereas Sean Dyche’s Toffees will be looking to successfully avoid relegation to the Championship once again, but more comfortably than they did last season.
After accumulating 40 points in their 38 Premier League matches, David Moyes’ West Ham United finished in 14th place, with a comfortably 6 point margin separating themselves and the relegation zone. Despite the disappointment in their league position, the Hammers finished the season on a massive high when they won their first European trophy since winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 under then-Manager Ron Greenwood. A brace from forward Alan Sealey (70’ & 72’) sealed 2-0 win against German side 1860 Munich in the final.
West Ham won the Europa Conference League Final in Prague, beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1 thanks to goals coming courtesy of Saïd Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’).
Following the dismissal of Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes was appointed as his permanent successor at the London Stadium in December 2019. This was the Scot’s second spell with the Hammers. By the end of the 2019/20 season, West Ham finished 5 points above the relegation zone in 16th place with 39 points to their name.
The 2020/21 season saw an improved West Ham side finish in 6th place with 65 points which secured them Europa League football. This was not only their highest ever league finish, they were also just 2 points adrift of the Champions League qualification with Chelsea in 4th on 67 points after 38 matches. They got to the semi-final of the Europa League the following season, losing 3-1 on aggregate over two legs against German team Eintracht Frankfurt.
In the 2021/22 season, they did finish in 7th place with 56 points, securing their spot in the Europa Conference League for the following season (2022/23).
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers last season with 6 goals each. Michail Antonio got 5 goals whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá both got 4 goals.
Sean Dyche took over as Everton’s Head Coach just a week after the dismissal of Frank Lampard by the Toffees on 23rd January 2023. Following some good results, including a 1-0 win against Arsenal and a win against Bournemouth by the same score line at Goodison Park saw them seal their Premier League status and avoid a first ever relegation from the Premier League.
Dwight McNeil was Everton’s top goal scorer last season with 7, whilst Abdoulaye Doucouré was close behind him with 5 goals. Demarai Gray and Anthony Gordon (now at Newcastle United) got 4 and 3 goals respectively.
West Ham United and Everton met for the very first time competitively all the way back in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie at Upton Park on 2nd February 1907. Overall, the Toffees have won 74 of their 149 meetings in comparison to the Hammers’ 44. There have been 31 draws between these two clubs at the time of writing.
The most recent match played between these two teams took place in the Premier League on 21st January 2023 where West Ham United were 2-0 winners against Everton at the London Stadium with goals from Jarrod Bowen (34’ & 41’).
