West Ham United and Liverpool are set to come face to face once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season at the London Stadium. David Moyes’ Hammers will be playing Europa League football after their 2-1 Europa Conference League success against Fiorentina in Prague, and they will be hoping to obtain a top-seven finish in the Premier League this season, with the Reds looking to return to the Champions League and the top four.
In the Europa Conference League Final in Prague, the Hammers secured a 2-1 win against Fiorentina through goals coming courtesy of Saïd Benrahma’s penalty (62’) and Jarrod Bowen’s (90’).
A week after the departure of then-Head Coach Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes was named as the Chilean’s successor at the London Stadium in December 2019, with the club sitting in a perilous 17th place. The Scot guided them to safety, winning enough matches to accumulate 39 points to give them a 5-point gap between themselves and a first relegation to the Championship since May 2011 (2019/20).
In the following season (2020/21), Moyes’ West Ham made massive progress finishing in 6th place with 65 points which stands as the club’s highest-ever league finish. A top-six finish also saw them qualify for the next season’s Europa League competition. They managed to reach the semi-final of the Europa League, losing 3 – 1 on aggregate over two legs to German team Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 2021/22 Premier League season saw West Ham finish in 7th place with 56 points and 2 adrift of securing Europa League Qualification. They did secure European Football, where they would go on to win the Europa Conference League.
As for the Premier League, Moyes’ Hammers finished in 14th place with 40 points, a comfortable 6 clear of the bottom three.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers last season with 6 goals each. Michail Antonio got 5 goals, whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá both got 4 goals.
In October 2015, ex-Borussia Dortmund Head Coach Jürgen Klopp was announced as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Liverpool following the latter’s dismissal just four days earlier. The German has spent almost a decade on Merseyside and he has led the Reds to a number of trophies to date: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 FA Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Last season, Klopp’s side finished 5th in the Premier League table with 67 points and just 4 adrift of a Champions League place. Mohamed Salah was Liverpool’s top scorer with 19 goals, whilst Roberto Firmino came second with 11 to his name. Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez got 9 goals, whilst Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota got 7 goals each.
West Ham United and Liverpool met in a competitive fixture for the very first time on 5th January 1901 in the FA Cup. It is the Reds who have a superior record of 81 wins in their 147 meetings to date, in comparison to the Hammers’ 29. The two clubs have drawn on 37 occasions to date in all competitions.
The most recent match to take place between these two teams took place on 26th April 2023 in the Premier League at the London Stadium, where Liverpool beat West Ham United 2-1. Lucas Paquetá (12’) scored the home side’s only goal of the game, whilst it was Cody Gakpo (18’) and Joël Matip (67’) got the goals for Klopp’s Reds.
