The London Stadium will host what is set to be an enthralling battle between David Moyes’ West Ham United and a Manchester City side led by Pep Guardiola in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Hammers will have their sights set on the top half as well as having ambitions of being in the race for European qualification. Meanwhile, the Cityzens will be hoping to win a fourth consecutive title, a feat without precedent in the more than 30 year history of the Premier League.
Following the dismissal of Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes was appointed West Ham’s Head Coach in December 2019. The Hammers sat in 17th place with 19 points, with 1 point separating themselves and the relegation zone. The Scottish Head Coach managed to turn things around, and by the end of that season (2019/20), West Ham finished in 16th place with 39 points and five clear of the bottom three.
The following season (2020/21) was a vastly improved season for the Hammers led by Moyes. West Ham ended up with a 6th place finish after accumulating 65 points, and they not only secured Europa League football, they also ended the campaign just 2 points off the Champions League places.
The Hammers did well in the Europa League in 2021/22, getting to the semi-final stage, where they, unfortunately, lost 3-1 on aggregate against German side Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs. They had another excellent season in the league, finishing in 7th place (56 points), which saw them secure a place in the Europa Conference League.
In the Premier League (2022/23), the Hammers finished 14th with 40 points, six clear of the bottom three. David Moyes’ side had a very successive Europa Conference League campaign getting to the final, where they were 2-1 winners against Italian side Fiorentina in Prague. Saïd Benrahma scored from the spot (62’), with Jarrod Bowen scoring a last gasp winning goal (90’) to win the club’s first European trophy since the club won the European Cup Winners Cup against 1860 Munich in 1965.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers last season with six goals each. Michail Antonio got five goals, while Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá both got four.
In 2016, Pep Guardiola took over at Manchester City following the departure of Manuel Pellegrini. Guardiola has a reputation as a serial winner in domestic and European football, and the Spaniard has continued this trend with the Cityzens. In his almost ten year spell with the club, he has led the club to more than ten trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
Manchester City beating Inter Milan to win the 2023 Champions League title is the crowning achievement of Guardiola’s time at the club. City won the final 1-0 in Istanbul thanks to a second half goal from Rodri (68’).
Erling Haaland was the Premier League and Manchester City’s leading goal scorer last season with 36 goals. Haaland also led the way in the Champions League with 12 in all. Phil Foden came second with 11 goals for City in the Premier League, whilst Julián Álvarez and İlkay Gündoğan got 9 and 8 goals, respectively.
West Ham United and Manchester City met in a competitive fixture for the first time on 26th April 1924 in the league. Out of their 109 meetings, the Cityzens have a superior record of 62 wins compared to the Hammers’ 38. There have been 19 draws between these two clubs in all.
Manchester City beat West Ham United 3-0 in their most recent meeting in the Premier League on 3rd May 2023.
