Graham Potter’s West Ham United are set to take on a Newcastle United side who are currently led by their English Head Coach Eddie Howe when the Hammers welcome the Magpies to the London Stadium in the heart of East London. This game is going to take place during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Securing a crucial victory against Newcastle would see West Ham take a step closer to realising their ambitions for the current campaign. They are looking to aim for a top half finish, although they could certainly be amongst the clubs who are battling to secure qualification for European Football for the following season.
The incumbent Head Coach of West Ham United Football Club is, of course, Graham Potter, who has been in charge ever since the club made the announcement to confirm his appointment to replace Julen Lopetegui in the dugout back on Thursday 9th January 2025. Potter is, of course, an experienced manager in English Football, having previously taken charge of the likes of Swansea City, Brighton, and Chelsea.
The opening months of Potter’s time at the club saw him lead the team away from the relegation zone to survive very comfortably in the end in the Premier League, with them finishing up in 14th place after a total of no less than 43 points had been accumulated overall from their 38 games in total. The 2025/26 campaign will be his first full season in charge.
On the final day of the 2024/25 season, the Hammers were able to finish it on a high, with them going on to beat Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town side 3 – 1 thanks to the goals that came from the likes of James Ward-Prowse (43’), Jarrod Bowen (55’), and Mohammed Kudus (87’). The only goal for the Tractor Boys came from their forward Nathan Broadhead early on in the second half (52’).
Moving on to Newcastle United, their English Head Coach Eddie Howe has been in charge ever since confirmation of his appointment to replace his predecessor Steve Bruce at St. James’s Park came back on Monday 8th November 2021.
Since then, he has guided them to qualification for the highly coveted UEFA Champions League on two occasions. This was first accomplished in the 2022/23 Premier League season, when they finished on 71 points. They achieved the same feat again last season (2024/25), finishing in 5th place overall with 66 points, securing qualification on the basis of goal difference ahead of Aston Villa in 6th place.
Also, last season, there was some long awaited silverware that was won by Newcastle United, with them winning the 2025 Carabao Cup Final at the iconic and historic Wembley Stadium. They were able to beat Liverpool 2 – 1 thanks to goals from the likes of Dan Burn (45’) and Alexander Isak (52’), whilst the only goal for Arne Slot and his Reds side came from Italian international forward Federico Chiesa early on in second half stoppage time (90+4’). This was their first piece of silverware for no less than 56 years.
The last time that these West Ham were able to beat Newcastle in a competitive match in all competitions came in the Premier League back on Monday 25th November 2024 at St. James’s Park when the Hammers were 2 – 0 winners thanks to goals from the likes of Tomas Soucek (10’) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (53’), who found the back of the net either side of half time.
Overall, West Ham United and Newcastle United have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 146 occasions, and it is the Magpies who currently have the superior record of as many as 61 wins in this fixture compared with the Hammers’ 44 wins against Newcastle so far. There have also been 41 draws between these two teams to date, as of the time of writing.
