Nottingham Forest are set to travel south to East London, where they are set to face West Ham United at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. David Moyes’ Hammers will look to finish in the top half and be in the European football race, whereas a Forest side led by Steve Cooper will look to climb the table and avoid relegation more comfortably.
December 2019 saw David Moyes become West Ham United Head Coach for the second time. The Scot succeeded Manuel Pellegrini, who left the club sitting in 17th place after accumulating 19 points in 19 matches. Moyes turned the club’s fortunes around, leading them to a 16th place finish with 39 points. They ended the 2019/20 season 5 clear of the bottom three.
The 2020/21 season was a special one for West Ham, with the club going from strength to strength throughout that campaign, with the Hammers finding themselves in 6th place by the end of the season with 65 points and qualification for the Europa League secured. Just 2 points separated the club from a 4th place finish, with Chelsea securing the final Champions League qualification spot.
A 7th place finish followed in the 2021/22 season, which saw the Hammers qualify for the Europa Conference League. In the Europa League, they reached the semi-final, losing 3-1 on aggregate against Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs. On their way to the semi-final, they got the better of the likes of Olympique Lyonnais and Sevilla, the most successful side in the competition’s history, and they recently won the competition for the 7th time in 2023.
The Hammers’ 14th place finish last season (2022/23) was a disappointment, but the club did win its first European title since their 2-0 European Cup Winners Cup win in 1965 against German side 1860 Munich at Wembley Stadium. Moyes’ side made it to the Europa Conference League Final in Prague, where they were 2-1 winners against Italian Serie A side Fiorentina. Goals came via a Saïd Benrahma penalty (62’) and a late winner from Jarrod Bowen (90’).
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers last season with six goals each. Michail Antonio scored five goals, while Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got four.
Steve Cooper has been a revelation since he joined the club on 21st September 2021. He succeeded Chris Hughton at the City Ground, with the club sitting at the foot of the Championship table. Cooper completely turned Forest’s fortunes around, going from 24th to a 4th place finish in the second tier with 80 points accumulated in total after 46 matches.
Forest secured a spot in the Championship Play-Offs, making it to the final where they were 1-0 winners against Huddersfield Town at Wembley following a goal in the first half thanks to a Levi Colwill own goal (43’). This goal sealed Forest’s return to the Premier League after more than 20 years away.
After more than 20 new signings, Steve Cooper’s side managed to secure safety, avoiding an immediate return to the Championship. The Reds finished in 16th with 38 points, four clear of the drop.
Taiwo Awoniyi, who signed for the club from Germany’s Union Berlin in the summer transfer window, was Forest’s leading Premier League scorer with ten goals. Brennan Johnson was close behind him with eight goals, followed by Morgan Gibbs-White, who got 5.
West Ham United and Nottingham Forest met in a competitive fixture for the first time on 14th January 1911 at Upton Park in the 1st Round of the FA Cup, where the home side won 2-1. The Hammers have the superior record of 47 wins in their 118 meetings compared to Forest’s 45. There have been 26 draws between these two clubs.
West Ham won the most recent Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on 25th February 2023 at the London Stadium. David Moyes’ Hammers won 4-0 thanks to goals from Danny Ings (71’, 73’), Declan Rice (78’) and Michail Antonio (85’).
