West Ham United and Sheffield United are set to go head to head at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. David Moyes’ team will want to secure a top half finish and challenge for European football. Meanwhile, the Blades, who Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom leads, will be looking to avoid an immediate return to the Championship after a two-year absence.
After 18 months in charge, Manuel Pellegrini was dismissed by West Ham on 28th December 2019, with David Moyes being announced as his successor just a day later. The Scot joined the club and sat 17th with 19 points after 19 matches. By the end of the 2019/20 season, Moyes had managed to guide the Hammers to a 16th-place finish, five clear of the drop.
UEFA Europa League football was secured with a 6th place finish at the conclusion of the 2020/21 season, accumulating 65 points with just 2 points separating them from a top-four spot which would have seen them qualify for the Champions League. Moyes’ Hammers were able to reach the 2021 Europa League Semi-Final, where they lost 3-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt – they had got to this point after beating the likes of Olympique Lyonnais and Europa League specialists Sevilla along the way.
The 2021/22 league campaign was successful, with Europa Conference League football secured following a 7th place finish for the Hammers after accumulating 56 points – just two behind 6th place Manchester United.
Last season (2022/23), David Moyes’ West Ham did finish 14th in the league, but history was made with a 2-1 win against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League Final in Prague. This was a first European trophy since they were 2-0 winners against German outfit 1860 Munich in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 at Wembley Stadium.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers in the Premier League last season, with six goals each. Michail Antonio scored five goals, while Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got four.
With the 2020/21 Premier League season drawing to a close, Paul Heckingbottom replaced Chris Wilder, becoming Sheffield United’s Interim Head Coach, but he could not prevent the Blades’ relegation. At the start of the 2021/22 Championship season, Slaviša Jokanović was named Wilder’s permanent successor at Bramall Lane. The club dismissed the Serbian in favour of Heckingbottom in November 2021. The club went on to lose in the Championship Play-Off Semi-Final against Nottingham Forest.
Last season saw Paul Heckingbottom and the Blades gain automatic promotion to the Premier League after 91 points from their 46 matches saw them finish in 2nd place behind Championship Champions Burnley.
Iliman Ndiaye was the Blades’ top goal scorer in the Championship last season with 14 goals, with Oli McBurnie close behind him with 13 goals.
West Ham United and Sheffield United met in a competitive fixture for the first time on 1st January 1924 in a 2-0 league win for the Hammers at Bramall Lane. Overall, the two clubs have played against each other on 91 occasions, with the Blades having a superior record of 38 wins compared to the Hammers’ 32. There have been 21 draws at the time of writing.
West Ham were 3-0 winners at the London Stadium the last time these two teams met in the Premier League on 15th February 2021. Declan Rice (41′ – Penalty), Issa Diop (58′) and Ryan Fredericks (90+6′) all scored for the home side that day.
