David Moyes’ West Ham United are set to welcome a Wolves side led by Gary O’Neil to the London Stadium when the two clubs meet in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Hammers will have their sights on European qualification, while Wolves will have ambitions of finishing in the top half come the season’s conclusion.
With West Ham sitting 17th in the Premier League table with 19 points, Manuel Pellegrini’s 18 month spell at the club ended. The Chilean Head Coach was succeeded by David Moyes, who took charge on 29th December 2019. By the end of the 2019/20 season, the Hammers finished 5 points clear of the relegation zone in 16th place. Moyes’ side went on to make incredible progress the following season.
The 2020/21 season saw West Ham finish in 6th place, with Europa League football also secured. Moyes’ side collected 65 points after 38 matches which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification by just 2 points.
After beating the likes of Olympique Lyonnais and Sevilla, West Ham reached the Europa League semi-final in the 2021/22 season, where they would face Eintracht Frankfurt. Unfortunately, the Hammers lost 3-1 on aggregate over two legs against their German counterparts.
In the league, West Ham remained impressive, finishing in 7th place with 56 points, just two adrift of Manchester United in 6th place. The Hammers had secured Europa Conference League football for the 2022/23 season.
A 14th place finish in the Premier League last term was disappointing for the club, but it was followed up by David Moyes leading his team to the club’s first European trophy in almost 70 years. West Ham reached the Europa Conference League Final, where they were 2-1 winners against Italian Serie A side Fiorentina in Prague.
A brace from Alan Sealey (70′, 72′) ensured West Ham’s 2-0 win against Germany’s 1860 Munich in the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1965. This had been the Hammers’ most recent European trophy.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers in the Premier League last season, with six goals each. Michail Antonio scored five goals, while Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got four.
On 5th November 2022, former Sevilla Head Coach Julen Lopetegui was confirmed as Wolves Head Coach, succeeding Bruno Lage, who had been dismissed by the club the previous month. After being in relegation trouble when he took over, the Spaniard managed to lead Wolves to a 13th place finish with 41 points by the end of the 2022/23 season.
By the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, Lopetegui had left the club and he was replaced by ex-Bournemouth Head Coach Gary O’Neil. O’Neil took over at the Cherries as their caretaker manager after the departure of Scott Parker in August 2022. After an upturn in form, he later took over as Parker’s successor in November of that year.
O’Neil did guide Bournemouth to 15th place by the end of last season with 5 points separating themselves and the drop. Despite this, he left the club at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
Daniel Podence and Rúben Neves were Wolves’ joint top goal scorers last season, both scoring six goals. Hwang Hee-Chan came second with three, while Matheus Cunha and Adama Traoré scored two goals each.
West Ham United and Wolves met for the first time in a competitive fixture on 5th February 1910 in what was an FA Cup Second Round tie which the Hammers won 5-1 at Molineux. A George Webb hat-trick and a Danny Shea brace secured West Ham an emphatic victory.
Overall, the two clubs have played against each other on 71 occasions. It is the Hammers who have the superior record of 33 wins in comparison to Wolves’ 24. There have been 24 draws between these two clubs to date.
West Ham were beaten 1-0 by Wolves in their most recent meeting in the Premier League in January 2023.
