Wolves, led by their Portuguese Head Coach Vitor Pereira, are set to take on Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Molineux in what is the latest chapter of this long standing and hard fought local rivalry. Bragging rights are very much at stake in this fixture, and Wolves can claim them with victory, whilst also taking a significant step closer to avoiding the dreaded drop this season.
The most recent game to have taken place between these two clubs at Molineux in the Premier League took place back on 8th October 2023, in what was a hotly contested 1 – 1 draw in the end. Hwang Hee-Chan gave Wolverhampton Wanderers the lead early on in the second half (53’) before a header just a few moments later from Villa’s Spanish central defender Pau Torres restored parity by scoring the second and final goal of the game (55’).
Vitor Pereira, the current Head Coach of Wolves, has been in charge since he was announced as Gary O’Neil’s successor at the West Midlands outfit on 19th December 2024. The Portuguese joined the club after leaving his job in Saudi Arabia with Al Shabab. He has also been in charge of clubs such as Porto, Al Ahli, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce, 1860 Munich, Corinthians, and Flamengo.
Since he took charge, he has led the club to that statement 2 – 0 victory against Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United at Molineux, when the goals for the home side came courtesy of goals from Matheus Cunha (58’) and Hwang Hee-Chan (90+9’) in the second half.
As for Aston Villa, their current Head Coach Unai Emery took charge of the club on 24th October 2022, becoming the successor to Steven Gerrard who had been dismissed immediately following a heavy 3 – 0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage a few days earlier. Since then the Villans have gone from strength to strength.
By the end of the 2022/23 season, the Spaniard had led the club to qualification for European Football via the UEFA Europa Conference League for the first time in more than 10 years. It was a competition where they got to the Semi Final, where they were defeated on aggregate over two legs by Greek Giants Olympiacos.
Qualification for the highly coveted UEFA Champions League was then secured with a 4th place finish at the end of last season (2023/24), and they are currently on course to qualify for the Round of 16 and are in contention for European Football once again in the Premier League this season (2024/25).
Over the years, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa have faced each other many times in competitive fixtures over the years, with 137 fixtures so far in all. At the moment, it is Villa who has the superior record of 58 victories compared with Wolves’ total of 44. There have been 35 draws between them so far.
Wolves and Aston Villa will be going head to head at Molineux in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is going to be very competitive and hard fought with a tremendous atmosphere to boot.
