About the BMW PGA Championship

The BMW PGA Championship was first played in 1955 and was originally known as the British PGA Championship. Since then, it has developed into one of the most prestigious tournaments on the European golfing calendar and a highlight of the DP World Tour season.

JJ Spaun became the latest player to lift the trophy following his victory at Wentworth in September 2026. The American secured his maiden BMW PGA Championship title with a final-round 67, finishing on 17 under par to claim a two-shot victory ahead of Rory McIlroy, Aaron Rai, Adam Scott and Manuel Elvira, who shared second place.

Spaun’s victory came a year after Sweden’s Alex Noren secured his second BMW PGA Championship title in 2025. Noren defeated Adrien Saddier with a birdie at the first extra hole of their play-off, adding to his previous Wentworth victory in 2017.

The championship has a distinguished list of former winners, including Rory McIlroy, Ryan Fox, Tyrrell Hatton, Danny Willett, Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Severiano Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, José María Olazábal and Billy Horschel.

Colin Montgomerie remains the only player to have won three consecutive editions, claiming the title in 1998, 1999 and 2000, while former World Number One Luke Donald recorded back-to-back victories in 2011 and 2012.

Billy Horschel has also enjoyed considerable success at Wentworth, winning the BMW PGA Championship in both 2021 and 2024. His second victory came after a dramatic play-off with Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence, making him the first American to win the championship twice.

The BMW PGA Championship has been held at Wentworth Club since 1984, with the famous West Course providing the setting for some of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history.

Traditionally staged in May, the championship moved to a September date in 2019 following changes to the international golfing calendar.

Today, the BMW PGA Championship is one of the leading events on the DP World Tour and forms part of the prestigious Rolex Series, regularly attracting Major Champions, Ryder Cup players and some of the most recognisable names in professional golf.

In 2027, the championship will take place from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th September, the week immediately following the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland. It will be the third Rolex Series event of the 2027 DP World Tour season.

Wentworth Club: The Home of the BMW PGA Championship

Wentworth Club is located in Virginia Water, Surrey, on the south-western fringes of London and close to Windsor.

The history of the estate stretches back to 1805, when the Gothic-style house known as Wentworths was built. In 1920, developer George Tarrant acquired the house and surrounding land, before Wentworth Club was established in 1922.

Renowned golf course architect Harry Colt designed the East Course, which opened in 1924, followed by the famous West Course in 1927. Wentworth has since developed into one of the most recognisable golfing venues in the United Kingdom, hosting prestigious international tournaments throughout its history.

Today, Wentworth Club features three 18-hole golf courses, with the East and West Courses joined by the Edinburgh Course, which opened in 1990.

The West Course is particularly renowned for its demanding layout and dramatic closing stretch. Its par-five 18th hole has provided the setting for numerous memorable finishes at the BMW PGA Championship, with the green surrounded by grandstands and hospitality facilities during tournament week.

Tree-lined fairways, strategically positioned bunkers and challenging greens provide a demanding test for the world’s leading players, while the historic clubhouse forms an iconic backdrop to the championship.

For golf hospitality guests, Wentworth provides a choice of premium experiences during the BMW PGA Championship. The Ballroom combines clubhouse hospitality and premium dining with dedicated seating overlooking the 18th green.

The 72 Lounge offers a more relaxed and informal experience within the Championship Village, while the 72 Signature Lounge enhances this concept with reserved tables and dedicated 18th Green Grandstand seating until 4pm.

Together, these hospitality options allow guests to enjoy premium facilities at Wentworth while retaining the freedom to follow the action around the famous West Course.

Entertainment away from the golf course has also become an important part of the Festival of Golf atmosphere at Wentworth. The 2026 event featured live performances from The Kooks on Saturday and Ella Eyre following the conclusion of play on Sunday.
