About the BMW PGA Championship
The illustrious BMW PGA Championship was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers’ Association. Originally named the British PGA Championship, the famed tournament has since been the subject of several high profile sponsorship deals.
The competition boasts a number of distinguished winners including the most recent champion, Billy Horschel, who secured victory at 20 under par, beating Thriston Lawrence and Rory McIlroy in a playoff. Other winners include Ryan Fox, Tyrell Hatton, Danny Willett, former world No1 Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Severiano Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam and José María Olazábal. In 2000, Colin Montgomerie became the only player to win three years successively, whilst former World No.1 Luke Donald achieved a rare double with back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2012.
2024 Champion Horschel is set to return in the 2025 BMW PGA Championship looking not only to defend his title at Wentworth, but also to win the tournament for an incredible third time. He is part of a field that will also boast the likes of 2014 winner Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy comes into this tournament having recently been crowned as the reigning Champion of The Masters, having earned a dramatic and jubilant play-off victory against Justin Rose at Augusta.
It has also been officially confirmed that the likes of Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry will also be taking part in this year’s BMW PGA Championship and they will all be looking to prevent Billy Horschel from winning this highly prestigious tournament for the second successive year.
The aforementioned Lowry is a past winner of this Championship at Wentworth, having won it back in 2022 after beating joint runners-up Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm by one stroke at 17 under par. Aberg and Fleetwood will be looking to win it for the very first time in 2025.
The contest traditionally commenced annually in May over the West Course of Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, Surrey – the south-western fringes of London, not far from Windsor Castle. After the US PGA major recommenced in May, the BMW PGA moved to later on in the year.
The PGA European Tour is headquartered at Wentworth Golf Club and as the tour’s home tournament, it is widely considered to be one of the leading social and sporting events in the calendar. The winner of the Championship is given an exemption from the season’s upcoming U.S. Open and the subsequent Open Championships.
The club is owned by the Beijing-based Reignwood Group which purchased the famed premises in 2014. But Wentworth Golf Club can be traced back to the 19th-century house the “Wentworths” (now the dedicated clubhouse), then home to the brother-in-law of the Duke of Wellington.
Wentworth’s rich heritage is a tribute to the unequivocal talent and vision put forward by several generations of extraordinary men and women.
Were it not for developer Walter George Tarrant and golf course architect, Harry Colt, Wentworth would not exist today. Tarrant saw the development potential of the site and possessed the skills and the business acumen to make his vision a reality. Meanwhile, Colt was tasked with creating two fully-fledged golf courses in the wooded, heath-land setting, first the East and three years later the West.
Today Wentworth Golf Club offers a fantastic range of facilities, from three 18 hole golf courses to a one nine-hole Par 3 executive course. Extensive practice facilities and a bespoke TaylorMade Performance Lab also prominently feature at this venerable setting.
For golf hospitality lovers, the clubhouse boasts several restaurants, bars, as well as private meeting and dining rooms for up to 300 guests. The Ryder Cup also boasts links to the distinguished Club. The Roaring 20s were in full swing when Walter Hagen claimed he was bringing “the most powerful team whoever left New York” over to Wentworth for a team match between British and American professionals.
Hagen’s team took a beating that day, but the result of the 1926 encounter was immaterial. The occasion saw such resounding success that Samuel Ryder, who provided the trophy, stated his intent on making the fixture permanent. Hence the Ryder Cup was born.
When it returned to Wentworth in 1953, it was the Americans who triumphed despite their star player Ben Hogan absent from the play. The Ryder Cup has been instrumental in placing Wentworth on the global map of tournament golf; it proudly remains there to this day.

Where are the entrances to the BMW PGA Championship tournament?
The ‘Welcome Pavilion’ is the main entrance and there is also a dedicated walkway for those who arrive on a park and ride bus.
Where are the car parks?
There are 7 car parks. BMW owners and those who possess car parking labels can park in the following areas: Red Entrance (Car Parks 1 & 2, although this is only for players and officials), Blue Entrance (BMW Owners – Car Park 7), Green Entrance (Car Parks 4, 5 and 6) and the Yellow Entrance (Car Park 3).
Where are the dedicated wheelchair viewing areas at Wentworth?
There are a total of 2 dedicated wheelchair viewing areas. One is located at the 1st tee, and the other is located beside the 18th hole.
