Betfred, the UK-based bookmakers, will be the title sponsor of this tournament for a sixth consecutive year.
Founded during the 1940s, the British Masters has become the staple of the golfing calendar. Having previously been hosted by Lee Westwood, Tommy Fleetwood, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, the tournament has risen in popularity, bringing drama and tension each year. The Masters has found a permanent home at the legendary The Belfry, where 50,000 spectators lined the fairways during last year’s tournament. For 2024, six-time Major Champions Sir Nick Faldo will be the new long-term host of the Betfred British Masters until 2026.
Iconic moments are commonplace at The British Masters, there have been a number of memorable moments over the years.
Initially the British Masters varied its location, and in 1967 it was hosted at the Royal St. George’s in Kent. An iconic moment in this particular year saw Tony Jacklin achieve the first ever hole in one to be televised on British TV.
In the 1989 British Masters, Nick Faldo made history when he finished 21 shots under par with a record score of 267. What was extraordinary about this was that this record would only last until 1993 when Peter Baker triumphed 22 under par. The Englishman’s record still stands to this day.
Since the tournament started all the way back in the 1940s, only 13 players have ever won the British Masters more than once (at the time of writing): Seve Ballesteros (1986 & 1991), Harry Bradshaw (1953 & 1955), Bernard Gallacher (1974 & 1975), Bernard Hunt (1963 & 1965), Tony Jacklin (1967 & 1973), Cobie Legrange (1964 & 1969), Bobby Locke (1946 – tied with Jimmy Adams) & 1954), Greg Norman (1981 & 1982), Christy O’Connor Senior (1956 & 1959), Dai Rees (1950 & 1962), Peter Thomson (1961 & 1968), Harry Weetman (1952 & 1958) & Ian Woosnam (1983 & 1994).
There was good news for golf fans across the globe when it was announced that Justin Rose will be returning to the British Masters last year. Rose has of course been the world’s number one and he famously won the 2013 US Open at Merion Golf Club, which saw him become the first Englishman to win a major Championship since Sir Nick Faldo won his third Masters title in 1996.
Justin Rose also came into this tournament with some momentum after he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2023. This ended a winless streak that had lasted four years in total.
The Belfry hosted the British Masters for the very first time in 2006 which saw Johan Edfors win by 1 stroke ahead of Gary Emerson, Stephen Gallacher and Jarmo Sandelin. It then hosted Lee Westwood’s win in 2007 and Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño’s win in 2008.
Then, after 15 years away, the prestigious British Masters returned to the famous Belfry for the 2021 tournament which saw England’s Richard Bland taste success, winning with 13 below par.
In 2022, Thorbjorn Olesen sunk consecutive 30-35 feet putts to join Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle and Lee Trevino in claiming the British Masters winners trophy. This year is guaranteed to be better, with the popular tournament returning to the iconic Brabazon Course in VIP style.
The Brabazon underwent several stages to update it with new technologies and make it more challenging for the Betfred British Masters. The update introduced additional fourth tees to improve the golf experience while remaining a par 72 course.
The Betfred British Masters is a fantastic spectacle, and what better way to experience the tournament than with excellent golf hospitality at the Belfry hotel. Packages include:
