The ever popular and iconic musical Les Misérables is back at the Sondheim Theatre for months of performances lasting until early March 2024. It’s debut in London’s West End came in October 1985 after being originally performed in Paris since 1980.
Les Misérables moved to the Sondheim Theatre on 3rd April 2004 after having been at the Barbican Centre and then the Palace Theatre from 1985 to 2004.
The Sondheim Theatre was first opened on 8th October 1907, but it was originally called ‘The Sugar Bowl’. Its name was changed to what it is today in 2019, named after Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim.
As one of the most popular musicals on the planet, it is no surprise that it has no shortage of acclaim. The following is just a handful of the awards that Les Misérables has won over the years: a Tony Award for Best Musical, a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, a Tony Award for Best Original Score, a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and the Laurence Olivier Award for Most Popular Show.
This musical has been performed over 14,000 times since its debut in 1985.
So popular is the musical that, in 2012, a film based on the book and the musical was released in cinemas across the world to critical acclaim. The movie featured a star studded cast, including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Helena Bonham Carter.
Les Misérables is set to be performed at the Sondheim Theatre over several months, with the last performance taking place on Saturday 2nd March 2024.
The original cast that performed Les Misérables in the West End included some famous names, including: Roger Allam (Javert), Alun Armstrong (Thenardier), Kerensa Baker (Innkeeper’s Wife), Michael Ball (Marius), Chris Beck (Sailor, Worker, Chain Gang & Joly) & Keith Burns (Montparnasse).
The cast has changed a lot over the years, and the 2023 cast includes: Dean Chisnall (Jean Valjean), Lulu-Mae Pears (Cosette), Stewart Clarke (Javert), Nathania Ong (Eponine), Gerard Carey (Thenardier), Robert Tripolino (Marius) & Harry Jack (Montparnasse).
