Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side is going to be coming face-to-face with a Sporting side that is led by their current Head Coach, Rui Borges, in the heart of North London. The two sides will be facing each other at the iconic Emirates Stadium in the second leg of this Champions League Quarter Final tie in the English Capital. These two sides will face each other here in April 2026.

The Gunners do, of course, have their sights set on victory as they look to continue their journey to the highly prestigious Final in Budapest, Hungary, in May. Securing their desired victory in this tie against their Portuguese counterparts would indeed give them momentum and a spot in the semi-finals.

Arsenal began their journey in this season’s UEFA Champions League in the League Phase, by the end of which they had finished at the top of the table in first place after going on to win all eight of their games at this stage of the competition. During the league phase, Arteta’s side got the better of the likes of Spain’s Athletic Club (2 – 0), Greece’s Olympiacos (2 – 0), Spain’s Atletico Madrid (4 – 0), Czech Republic’s Slavia Praha (3 – 0), Germany’s Bayern Munich (3 – 1), Belgium’s Club Brugge (3 – 0), Italy’s Inter Milan (3 – 1), and finally Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty (3 – 2). This, of course, secured them passage automatically into the Round of 16.

In the Round of 16, the club were drawn against German Giants Bayer Leverkusen over two legs, with the first taking place at the BayArena. This first leg saw the two sides draw 1 – 1, with the likes of Robert Andrich (46’) and former Leverkusen player Kai Havertz (89’ – Penalty) scoring for their respective sides.

Then, in the second leg, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side were comfortable and deserved 2 – 0 winners at the Emirates Stadium in North London. The Premier League leaders opened the scoring through a great goal from Eberechi Eze late on in the first half (36’), before Declan Rice then sealed the win with a goal in the early stages of the second half (63’). This secured what was a comfortable 3 – 1 victory on aggregate over these two legs.

Now, Arsenal will be taking on Portuguese Giants Sporting CP in the quarter-finals of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League.

Moving on to Arsenal’s opponents in the Quarter Finals, Rui Borges’ Sporting side stands in the way of their hosts’ spot in the final four of this season’s competition.

Starting with the League Phase, it was to be a credible 7th place finish with 16 points after all 8 games for Sporting CP, which means they too got automatic qualification for the Round of 16. They won five of their 8 games, drawing just once and losing twice.

Sporting’s wins came against the likes of Kairat Almaty (4 – 1), Marseille (2 – 1), Club Brugge (3 – 0), Paris Saint-Germain (2 – 1), and finally Athletic Club (3 – 2). Their only draw was a 1–1 away in Turin, Italy, against Serie A heavyweights Juventus. Meanwhile, their two defeats in the league phase came at the hands of Italian Giants Napoli (2 – 1) and the reigning Champions of the German Bundesliga, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich (3 – 1).

In the Round of 16, Sporting came up against the biggest surprise package of this season’s UEFA Champions League competition in the form of Norway’s Bodo/Glimt.

The first leg away from home in Norway for Sporting saw them defeated 3 – 0 following goals from Sondre Brunstad Fet (32’ – Penalty), Ole Didrik Blomberg (45+1’), and forward Kasper Hogh (71’), and there looked to be no way back for Borges’ Sporting side.

Then, in the second leg in Portugal, the home side Sporting CP secured their passage into the semi-finals after winning 5–3 on aggregate after extra time. Sporting were able to complete the comeback in style, winning 5 – 0 following the goals from the likes of Goncalo Inacio (34’), Pedro Goncalves (61’), Luis Suarez (78’ – Penalty), Maximiliano Araujo (92’), and finally Rafael Nel (120+1’).

Arsenal have only faced Sporting CP once in the entire history of the UEFA Champions League, with them facing each other on Matchday Five of the 2024/25 competition’s league phase. It was a game that took place at Sporting’s Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, where the Gunners were able to secure an emphatic and thoroughly deserved 5 – 1 victory away from home.

The goals for the North London side, led by Arteta, were from the likes of Gabriel Martinelli (7’), Kai Havertz (22’), Gabriel (45+1’), Bukayo Saka (65’ – Penalty), and Leandro Trossard (82’). The only goal of the game for the hosts, Sporting, came from their central defender Goncalo Inacio early in the second half (47’).
