The North London Derby is most certainly a fixture that stands out each and every season, and this intense and enthralling rivalry is set to resume once more when Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal welcome a Spurs side led by Ange Postecoglou in the 2024/25 Premier League season. A win for the Gunners against their North London rivals would no doubt enhance their chances of winning the league title.

Arsenal have become City’s closest title challengers, having finished as runners-up in both of the last two seasons. The Gunners came particularly close to glory last season (2023/24), where their final total of 89 points was only two behind Manchester City’s total of 91 points.

The primary architect of this club’s turnaround in fortunes has been their Spanish Head Coach Mikel Arteta – he has been in charge of the Gunners since he succeeded fellow Spaniard Unai Emery at the club back in December 2019.

Not only have Arsenal closely challenged Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for the title in both of the last two seasons, Arteta has guided them to two FA Community Shield titles, as well as a historic 14th FA Cup title following a 2 – 1 win against West London rivals Chelsea. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored both of the goals that day for the Gunners (28’ – Penalty, 67’).

Moving on to North London rivals Spurs, their Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has been in charge of Tottenham since 6th June 2023. The 2023/24 Premier League campaign was his first full season in charge of the Lilywhites, and in the end, they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after they had to settle for a 5th place finish with 66 points accumulated from 38 matches. They did still qualify for the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League.

There have been a number of memorable North London Derbies over the years. One that comes to mind took place at White Hart Lane on Sunday 25th April 2004. After needing a point to secure the title, Arsenal would go on to do just that to win the league in Spurs’ backyard. Patrick Vieira (3’) and Robert Pires (35’) both scored for the Gunners, whilst it was Jamie Redknapp (62’) and Robbie Keane (90+4’ – Penalty) who found the back of the net for the hosts that day.

They most recently met on 28th April 2024 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Arsenal won 3 – 2 in what was an enthralling Premier League game. An own goal from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (15’) got the scoring underway before Bukayo Saka made it 2 – 0 with almost half an hour gone (27’). It was then 3 – 0 just before the half time break when Kai Havertz was able to find the back of the net for the visitors. Spurs did pull two goals back in the second half thanks to Cristian Romero (64’) and a Son Heung-Min penalty (87’).

Arsenal and Spurs have played against each other competitively a total of 209 times over the years, with the Gunners having the superior record as of the time of writing with 87 compared to 67 for the Lilywhites. There have been 55 draws between them so far.

The North London Derby is one of the most highly anticipated fixtures on the English Football League calendar, with Arsenal and Spurs set to meet once more at the Emirates Stadium in the 2024/25 Premier League season. Both clubs will be looking to enhance their chances of realising their respective ambitions for the season.
