The red half of North London were strong at both ends of the pitch last season. Newcastle and Manchester City were the only two teams to have conceded less times than Arsenal did (43). Arsenal were a very prolific team in front of goal last term with no less than 88 goals in total – this meant that they were 27 goals better off than they were in the 2021/22 season, where they scored 61 goals.
Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Ødegaard were the joint top scorers for Arteta’s side last season with 15 goals each.
Ange Postecoglu became Antonio Conte’s permanent successor at Spurs in June 2023, just off the back of leading his Celtic side to the Scottish Premiership title for the second successive season. The hoops finished 7 points ahead of their Old Firm rivals Rangers, who had to settle for 2nd place. Celtic accumulated 99 points last season, winning 32 of their 38 league matches.
Spurs finished in 7th place last season with 60 points, narrowly missing out on European football. They found the net 70 times in total last season, which was the 5th best record last season. Only Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Brighton found the net more times than the Lilywhites.
Harry Kane, Spurs and England’s all-time leading goal scorer, was in great form once again last season, scoring no less than 30 goals in the league. Only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland had more with 36 in all.
Arsenal and Spurs’ first meeting came all the way back in November 1896, and they have met on 207 occasions at the time of writing. The Gunners have the superior record of 86 wins in comparison to Spurs’ 67.
January 2023 saw the most recent North London derby take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Arsenal won the bragging rights on this occasion, securing a 2-0 victory. Martin Ødegaard made sure of the victory for the away side midway through the first half (36’) after an own goal from Hugo Lloris had opened the scoring (14’).
Like with all North London derbies, this one is set to be an intense and thrilling occasion for fans of both clubs.
