Aston Villa, led by their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery, are set to welcome Scott Parker and his newly promoted Burnley side at Villa Park in the heart of the city of Birmingham during the much anticipated 2025/26 Premier League season. The aim for the season for Villa is to secure a return to the highly coveted and very prestigious UEFA Champions League, which can be achieved thanks to a top four finish in the Premier League.
Villa will know that a victory against the Clarets would be of significant help to their cause this season, and it would most certainly take them one step closer to realising their ambitions for the league this season, and it would create some momentum going into the remainder of their top flight campaign.
As for Burnley, Scott Parker and his time will just be looking to avoid relegation and an immediate return to the EFL Championship this year.
The atmosphere for this game is set to be electric as it is most weeks at games played at the iconic and historic Villa Park, and it also promises to be an enthralling contest between two sides who wear claret and blue on their home shirts each season.
Appointed to replace his predecessor Steven Gerrard in November 2022, Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery, formerly of the likes of Arsenal, Villarreal, and Sevilla, took charge of Villa, who went from a tense relegation battle to qualifying for European Football in that very same season in extraordinary fashion. It was to be a 7th place finish with a grand total of 61 points to their name following their 38 matches in the league alone.
In the 2023/24 campaign, Villa reached the Semi Finals of the UEFA Conference League in that season, only being knocked out of the competition at the last four stage on aggregate over two legs in a tie against the eventual winners Olympiacos, who are one of Greece’s biggest football clubs. As for the Premier League, Emery and his Villa side finished in 4th place with a grand total of 68 points which was enough for UEFA Champions League Qualification for the following season.
In the most recent season (2024/25) Villa were able to do well in the UEFA Champions League in that season.
Villa were able to beat the reigning Scottish League Champions Celtic (4 – 2), 1982 European Cup opponents and the current German Champions Bayern Munich (1 – 0), as well as another German club in the form of RB Leipzig (3 – 2).
Then came the Round of 16, where they were came up against Belgium’s  Club Brugge, who they were able to beat 6 – 1 on aggregate to set up a highly prestigious Quarter Final tie against Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning Champions of France and one of the favourites to win the competition.
PSG only narrowly won 5 – 4 over the two legs on aggregate, although Villa did have some joy when they were able to win the home game in what was the second leg 3 – 2. This was thanks to goals  that came from the likes of Youri Tielemans (34’), John McGinn (55’), and Ezri Konsa (57’), whilst it was two of PSG’s defenders, Achraf Hakimi (11’) and Nuno Mendes (27’), who scored both of the goals for the away side on that night.
In the Premier League itself, Aston Villa under Unai Emery’s management managed to qualify for European Football once again, with it this time being the highly prestigious UEFA Europa League for the 2025/26 season. They got 66 points, but only missed out on the top five and a second successive season of UEFA Champions League on goal difference to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
Moving on to Burnley, the newly promoted Clarets side are led by their English Head Coach Scott Parker, who has been in charge of the Lancashire club since his appointment to replace Vincent Kompany following the Belgian’s departure for German Giants Bayern Munich. Parker officially took charge back on 5th July 2024 ahead of the 2024/25 EFL Championship league campaign.
Scott Parker’s Burnley were superb in the English Second Tier last season, amassing an incredible total of no less than 100 points to finish in second place, where they only missed out on the league title on goal difference alone to their fellow newly promoted club Leeds United.
The last time that Aston Villa and Burnley met in the Premier League was back on 30th December 2023, when Villa were able to come away from Villa Park as 3 – 2 winners thanks to goals from the likes of Leon Bailey (28’), Moussa Diaby (42’), and Douglas Luiz, who was able to score from the penalty spot very late on into the second half (89’). The two goals for Burnley were scored by Zeki Amdouni (31’) and Lyle Foster (71’).
Overall, the two clubs have met on no less than 124 occasions in competitive matches in all competitions, and it is Aston Villa who currently have a superior record of 54 victories compared with Burnley’s total of 41 so far, as of the time of writing. There have been a total of 29 draws between the Villans and the Clarets overall, to date.
