Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side are going to be taking on a Chelsea side led by their Italian Head Coach Enzo Maresca at the iconic and historic Villa Park in the heart of the city of Birmingham during the 2025/26 Premier League season. With both sides looking for a Champions League spot this season, this is going to be a high profile and a much anticipated fixture for Villa and Chelsea fans alike.
With this being such a big game, the atmosphere at Villa Park will be incredible as ever for a game that is going to be highly competitive, full of action, and enthralling to boot in B6. All three points would strengthen Villa’s chances of making the top four and next season’s UEFA Champions League, whilst also damaging the chances of their West London counterparts to do so as well.
It was back in November 2022 that Unai Emery was officially Steven Gerrard’s permanent successor at Villa with the Spaniard taking charge with the club hovering just above the relegation zone, and going into the rest of the campaign they were in great form and they ended up with a 7th place finish with 61 points in total. This saw them confirm their place in the following season’s UEFA Conference League season.
Then in the 2023/24 campaign, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa only went from strength to strength, going on to finish in an incredible fourth place with 68 points in order to secure themselves qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the season after that. In the Conference League, they reached the Semi-Finals, where they were unfortunately knocked out of the competition by Greek Giants and eventual winners Olympiacos on aggregate over two legs.
Last season (2024/25), Aston Villa performed very well in the UEFA Champions League, and they were amongst the competition’s surprise packages for that year’s tournament, reaching the Quarter Finals where they were narrowly knocked out by PSG after losing 5 – 4 on aggregate against their Parisian counterparts.
Villa did win the second leg at Villa Park though, which was a triumph that was secured thanks to goals for the hosts that came from the likes of Youri Tielemans (34’), John McGinn (55’), and Ezri Konsa (57’), whilst it was two of PSG’s defenders, Achraf Hakimi (11’) and Nuno Mendes (27’), who scored both of the goals for the away side on that night.
Before that, Villa had secured league phase victories against the likes of Scottish League Champions Celtic (4 – 2), 1982 European Cup opponents and the current German Champions Bayern Munich (1 – 0), as well as another German club in the form of RB Leipzig (3 – 2). It was then Club Brugge in the Round of 16, who they were able to beat very comfortably and emphatically 6 – 1 on aggregate over the two legs, which included a well deserved 3 – 0 triumph at Villa Park, which followed a 3 – 1 success away from home in Belgium.
Moving on to Chelsea, their Italian Head Coach Enzo Maresca has been in charge of the Blues since he was appointed by the West London Club to succeed Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, taking charge officially back on 1st July 2024 after leaving newly promoted Leicester City to take over at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
In his first season in charge, Maresca guided Chelsea to a long awaited spot in the top five, finishing in third place with a grand total of no less than 69 points to finish in fourth place which secured them qualification for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. They also won the 2025 UEFA Conference League Final after beating Spanish La Liga side Real Betis 4 – 1 in Poland.
The last time that these two clubs went face to face competitively, which was in the Premier League at Villa Park back on 22nd February 2025. It was a 2 – 1 victory for Villa thanks to goals for the hosts from Marco Asensio, who scored a brace in the second half (57’, 89’), whilst it was Enzo Fernández who was the goal scorer of Chelsea’s only goal of the game on that day to give them what was an initial lead in this game in the opening ten minutes of the game in the first half at Villa Park (9’).
Overall, Aston Villa and Chelsea have gone head to head competitively in all competitions on a total of 168 times, and it is the Blues from West London who have the superior record of 70 victories in this fixture to date, as of the time of writing, whereas Villa are not that far behind on 61 victories of their own so far. There has also been 37 draws between these two clubs over the years.
