Aston Villa, led by their Head Coach Unai Emery, are set to play Everton once more at Villa Park, with the Toffees led by David Moyes. This 2025/26 Premier League fixture is the latest iteration of what is the most played fixture in the history of English Football’s top flight, and the Villans will be looking to come out on top against their Merseyside counterparts as they look to take a step closer to a return to the UEFA Champions League.
This game promises to be enthralling and highly competitive, with both clubs looking to give their chances of realising their respective ambitions for the current campaign a boost and create some momentum going into the games that follow this one. The atmosphere for this much anticipated game in B6 is set to be amazing as it so often is for games at Villa’s historic home.
The fortunes of Aston Villa have completely changed since Unai Emery officially took charge back in November 2022. By the end of that 2022/23 league campaign, the Spaniard managed to lead his club away from relegation trouble and to secure qualification for the UEFA Conference League following a 7th place finish after earning 61 points in total in the end.
Qualification for the UEFA Champions League was achieved under the stewardship of Emery in 2023/24, with Aston Villa finishing the campaign in 4th place after having accumulated a grand total of 68 points from their 38 matches in all. As for the Conference League, they got as far as the Semi Finals, which was when they were knocked out by the eventual winners Olympiacos over two legs.
Last season, 2024/25, saw Aston Villa compete in European Club Football’s Premier Cup Competition for the first time since they were the reigning European Champions back in the 1982/83 season. After beating the likes of Bayern Munich (1 – 0), Celtic (4 – 2), and RB Leipzig (3 – 2), Villa went on to secure an automatic place in the Round of 16.
It was Belgium’s Club Brugge who were in Villa’s way of the Quarter Finals. Unai Emery and his squad of players were able to get the better of their opponents over the two legs, beating them emphatically 6 – 1 on aggregate following a 3 – 1 win away from home in the first leg, which was followed by a comfortable 3 – 0 triumph at Villa Park in the second leg.
As for the league, Villa would go on to qualify for the UEFA Europa League ahead of their 2025/26 campaign after 66 points were enough for a 6th place finish. They only missed out on a second successive Champions League campaign on goal difference.
Moving on to Everton, club favourite David Moyes is currently enjoying his second spell in charge of the Toffees, with his return to the club having been confirmed back on 11th January 2025, succeeding Sean Dyche. He guided the Merseyside club to a respectable 13th place finish with 48 points, having previously been in relegation trouble before the Scot was appointed.
The 2025/26 season will be David Moyes’ first full season in charge of Everton since his return to the club.
These two clubs last met in a competitive fixture back on 15th January 2025 in what was Villa’s last-ever visit to Goodison Park. It was Moyes’ first game since his return, and it was the visitors who got a 1 – 0 victory thanks to a winning goal from Ollie Watkins (51’).
In all competitions, Aston Villa and Everton have gone head to head a total of 233 times. It is Villa with a superior record of 89 victories compared with the Toffees’ 83 so far, whilst there have also been 61 draws in total as of the time of writing.
