This season, Aston Villa is targeting a return to the UEFA Champions League, and a victory for Unai Emery and his team against Daniel Farke’s newly promoted Leeds United side could prove vital going into the rest of the campaign. This match is set to take place at the historic Villa Park in the heart of Birmingham during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
The atmosphere for this game in B6 promises to be brilliant as it so often is, and all in attendance will be in for an exciting and competitive match where the hosts will be looking to create momentum going into the rest of their current top flight campaign.
Villa will be looking to aid their efforts of securing Champions League football against a side that will be looking to re-establish themselves amongst English Football’s elite.
Unai Emery’s appointment was announced back in October 2022, becoming Steven Gerrard’s successor. The Spaniard’s tenure at the club officially began in November 2022 with his side in a relegation battle, but the club has gone from strength to strength since he arrived in the West Midlands.
61 points and a 7th place finish had been secured by the end of the 2022/23 season, and in doing so UEFA Conference League football had been secured.
2023/24 was Emery’s first full campaign in charge, and things got even better for his team and the club as a whole. Villa ended up with a superb 4th place finish after a total of 68 points was successfully secured to ensure UEFA Champions League football for the following season.
As for the UEFA Conference League, the Villans got to the Semi Finals where they went toe to toe with the Greek Giants Olympiacos over the two legs before they went on to win the competition after beating Italian Serie A Club Fiorentina 1 – 0 in the Final.
Last season, Villa had another great campaign in the league and in the Champions League. Starting with the Premier League, the West Midlands outfit ended up with a 6th place finish with 66 points, securing themselves qualification for the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League, missing out on a second consecutive season in the UEFA Champions League on goal difference alone.
As for the Champions League in the 2024/25 campaign, victories were secured in the League Phase against the likes of Celtic (4 – 2), Bayern Munich (1 – 0), and fellow German outfit RB Leipzig 3 – 2. They went on to qualify for the Quarter Finals where they came face to face with eventual 2025 winners PSG, who narrowly knocked Villa out 5 – 4 on aggregate. Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain were though beaten 3 – 2 at Villa Park which made things very tense for both sides.
Moving on to Leeds United, their current Head Coach Daniel Farke has been in charge of the club as Head Coach ever since he replaced Sam Allardyce on 4th July 2023, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
In his first campaign at the club (2023/24), the German led his side to what was a 3rd place finish with 90 points, only missing out on automatic promotion by 6 points. After getting the better of promotion rivals Norwich City in the play-off semi-finals, before then going on to be beaten 1 – 0 by Southampton in the play-off final at the iconic Wembley Stadium on 26th May 2024.
Leeds United were not to miss out on promotion back to the Premier League last season, with Daniel Farke and his team winning the title in the second tier after collecting a total of no less than 100 points, but incredibly only winning it on goal difference to Burnley, who also got a century of points in 2024/25.
This season will be Farke’s second full campaign in charge, and his first with this club in the top flight.
The last time that these two clubs met in the Premier League was back on 13th January 2023 in a match that took place at Villa Park. It was a 2 – 1 victory for the hosts, who got their goals through Leon Bailey (3’) and Emi Buendia (64’), whilst it was Patrick Bamford (83’) who scored the only goal for the visitors, whose Head Coach at the time was Jesse Marsch.
Overall, Aston Villa and Leeds United have faced each other in a competitive fixture in all competitions 106 times over the years, with Villa having the most victories to date with 42 compared with 32 for Leeds so far. There have also been 32 draws between them.
