Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are set to welcome a Bournemouth side led by another Spaniard in the form of the Cherries’ Head Coach Andoni Iraola to Villa Park, with the two clubs set to go toe to toe in B6 during the much anticipated 2025/26 Premier League season. The aim for Villa this season will be to secure themselves a return to the highly coveted UEFA Champions League by finishing in the top four for the second time in three seasons.
Bournemouth were among the clubs battling for European Football last season, and they will be looking to do so again this season. This game between Villa and their South Coast counterparts is promising to be an enthralling and highly competitive game, with an atmosphere that is set to be tremendous, with this being a big game for both clubs.
Villa’s current Head Coach Unai Emery has been in charge ever since he replaced Steven Gerrard in November 2022 to become the Liverpool Legend’s successor at Villa Park. The club has been transformed since then – under his stewardship the club went from a relegation battle to European Football in the second half of the 2022/23 season alone, qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League thanks to a 7th place finish with a total of 61 points from their 38 matches in total.
Then in the 2023/24 campaign, Aston Villa secured themselves a place in the highly coveted UEFA Champions League thanks to a superb campaign that saw them secure a place in the Premier League’s top four thanks to what was a highly commendable 4th place finish thanks to a points total of 68 overall. In the Europa Conference League, Villa made it all the way to the Semi Finals, where were to get knocked out by Greek heavyweights Olympiacos, who went on to win the whole competition by beating Italian outfit Fiorentina 1 – 0 after extra time at the Agia Sophia Stadium in Athens.
Last season, Villa were unfortunate not to qualify for the Champions League again, finishing outside of the top five on goal difference in 6th place and just behind Newcastle United who took the final spot. Both sides had a total of 66 points to their names.  They reached the Quarter Finals where they were knocked out of the Champions League after being beaten 5 – 4 on aggregate by PSG, even following a historic 3 – 2 victory over the Parisians in the second leg at Villa Park. There had been previous wins against the likes of Bayern Munich (1 – 0), RB Leipzig (3 – 2), and reigning Scottish Champions Celtic (4 – 2).
Instead, the Villans settled for a spot in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League, which is another way in which Unai Emery’s side can qualify for the Champions League again next season, which would be achieved by winning the Europa League this year. They will most certainly be amongst the favourites to go all the way to the Final and do exactly that.
Moving on to Bournemouth, their current Head Coach Andoni Iraola has been in charge ever since he was appointed to replace Gary O’Neil as his permanent successor at the South Coast club back on 19th June 2023.
His first season in charge was in the 2023/24 season, where he guided the Cherries to what was a 12th place finish with a points total that stood at 48. Last season, Iraola was able to lead Bournemouth in a challenge for European qualification where they ultimately fell short thanks to what was a 9th place finish in the end with 56 points, 9 points adrift of the European qualification places in the end, but it was a record points tally for the Cherries in the Premier League.
Aston Villa and Bournemouth last met in the Premier League back on 10th May 2025 at the Vitality Stadium on the South Coast in what was an important 1 – 0 away victory for Unai Emery’s Villa, who got their winning goal thanks to a great strike from Ollie Watkins (45+6’), who in scoring this winning goal became Aston Villa’s all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier League era with his 75th goal to take the record away from Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Overall, these two clubs have gone head to head in a competitive fixture in all competitions on a total of 15 occasions, and it is Aston Villa who have the superior record of 7 victories compared with the Cherries’ record of 5 overall. Villa has drawn with Bournemouth on just 3 occasions to date.
