Unai Emery’s Aston Villa will be going toe to toe with an RB Salzburg side, who are currently led by their German Head Coach Thomas Letsch, during the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League at Villa Park. Victory here for Villa would give them a boost for the remaining European matches, whilst also creating some momentum for the team as well.
The ambition for their latest European campaign is to go on and win the Europa League, and reaching the final will need some momentum along the way. Villa will also hope to be finishing in the top eight of the league so that they can qualify automatically for the knockout rounds. As a result, Villa will, of course, be looking to get the better of their Austrian opponents.
Villa boss Emery is a specialist when it comes to this competition, having won the Europa League trophy on many occasions over the course of what’s been a successful career in management. He has won this tournament no less than four times – three of these were won with Sevilla, whilst their fourth was won with another Spanish club, in the form of Villarreal.
Starting with his wins with Sevilla, Emery’s side won it on three occasions, with these triumphs also coming in successive seasons, with the first coming in the 2013/14 season. The first of the three was won by beating Benfica 4 – 2 on penalties, whilst the one in the season before that was won when they were 3 – 2 winners against the Ukrainian outfit Dnipro.
Then his third and final Europa League win with Sevilla was in the 2015/16 final against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who they were able to beat 3 – 1 thanks to the goals of Kevin Gameiro (46’) and Coke (64’, 70’), whilst the Reds were able to score to initially take the lead in the first half through Daniel Sturridge (35’).
As for his fourth in this competition against Villarreal, this came in the 2020/21 season, where they were able to win a final against England’s Manchester United, beating them 11 – 10 on penalties after the Yellow Submarine and the Red Devils could not be separated on the scoreline, even after extra time was completed.
As a club, Villa themselves of course do have some history in European competitions. Most notably, they won the European Cup (now Champions League) back in 1982 after they were able to beat Bayern Munich 1 – 0 thanks to a goal from forward Peter Withe midway through the second half in a game that was played at De Kuip in Rotterdam in the Netherlands (67’).
As for other successes in Europe for Villa, they have also won the UEFA Super Cup and the now defunct UEFA Intertoto Cup, doing so back in 1982 and 2001, respectively. In the Super Cup, they were able to beat Barcelona 3 – 1 on aggregate over two legs, even after being beaten 1 – 0 away from home in the first leg.
Moving on to RB Salzburg, the Austrian outfit qualified for the Europa League after finishing in second place in the Austrian Bundesliga last season.
This will be the first time that these two clubs have ever gone head to head competitively in any European competition, and Villa will be looking to win the first-ever encounter between themselves and their Austrian counterparts, RB Salzburg.
