The 2025 Carabao Cup Final will see two clubs come face to face under that iconic Wembley arch, where they will fight for the right to be named as the competition’s latest winners. The date for this showpiece occasion is yet to be confirmed, when it is, this page will be updated.
This year will see teams from the top four tiers of English football compete to win the Carabao Cup, with all of them looking to dethrone their reigning Champions, Liverpool. Just like the FA Cup, this competition does see a number of shock results take place, and this adds an extra layer of unpredictability as to whom will compete in the 2025 Final.
Dominance in the final of this competition has come from Premier League clubs, with the last winner to not be playing in the top flight at the time of their triumph being Sheffield Wednesday back in 1991. The Owls were 1 – 0 winners against Manchester United that day, beating the Red Devils thanks to a John Sheridan goal in the first half (37’). This win came with the club in the Second Division.
It must be noted that two sides in particular, who occupy leagues outside the Premier League, have made it to the League Cup Final in recent years. Championship club Cardiff reached the 2012 Final, losing 3 – 2 on penalties to Liverpool. The other club is Bradford City who reached the 2013 Final where they faced Swansea City, losing 5 – 0. The Bantams were in League Two, the fourth tier.
The most recent competition was played out over the course of the 2023/24 season, and it saw Liverpool win 1 – 0 against Chelsea in the 2024 Final.
The Reds are also the club who have won this competition the most times with 10 in all, including their 2023/24 win. The other 9 were won in 1981 (2 – 1 vs. West Ham, replay), 1982 (3 – 1 vs. Tottenham Hotspur), 1983 (2 – 1 vs. Manchester United), 1984 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), 1995 (2 – 1 vs. Bolton Wanderers), 2001 (5 – 4 on penalties vs. Birmingham City), 2003 (2 – 0 vs. Manchester United), 2012 (3 – 2 on penalties vs. Cardiff City), and in 2022 (11 – 10 on penalties vs. Chelsea).
Recent Carabao Cup Finals:
This competition began in the 1960/61 season, and its inaugural winners were Aston Villa after the club from the Second City were able to beat Rotherham United 3 – 2 over the course of two legs. Below are the ten most recent winners of the Carabao Cup:
2014/15 – Chelsea 2 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur
2015/16 – Liverpool 1 – 1 Manchester City (City won 3 – 1 on penalties)
2016/17 – Manchester United 3 – 2 Southampton
2017/18 – Arsenal 0 – 3 Manchester City
2018/19 – Chelsea 0 – 0 Manchester City (City won 4 – 3 on penalties)
2019/20 – Aston Villa 1 – 2 Manchester City
2020/21 – Manchester City 1 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur
2021/22 – Chelsea 0 – 0 Liverpool (Liverpool win 11 – 10 on penalties)
2022/23 – Manchester United 2 – 0 Newcastle United
