Chelsea against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in the 2023/24 season will see West and South London collide. Mauricio Pochettino will have his sights set on securing a top four spot for the Blues by the end of this season, whilst the Eagles will want to improve further on last season and finish in the top half of the Premier League table.
Just weeks after the end of the 2022/23 season, Chelsea announced the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their new Head Coach, becoming Graham Potter’s permanent successor at the Blues. After his dismissal at Spurs, Pochettino was named PSG’s new manager in January 2021. The Argentine won a plethora of trophies during his time in the French capital, including the Coupe de France (2020/21) and the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season.
Chelsea finished 12th in the league last season, accumulating 44 points in their 38 matches. They did make it to the Quarter Final of the Champions League where they lost against Real Madrid on aggregate over two legs. In the Premier League, Chelsea found the net 38 times in total.
The Blues were impressive defensively last season (2022/23), conceding 47 times which made them the joint 4th best side in terms of goals conceded, together with Liverpool.
Kai Havertz led the way for Chelsea in goals, scoring 7 in all. Raheem Sterling and João Félix closely followed the German international forward with 6 and 4 goals respectively.
Patrick Vieira was dismissed by Crystal Palace on 17th March 2023 after 2 years at the club. The French Head Coach was replaced by Roy Hodgson on an interim basis later that same month. Hodgson guided the Eagles to an 11th place finish in the Premier League with 45 points with a comfortable 11 point gap between themselves and the bottom three.
Crystal Palace’s leading goal scorer last season was Eberechi Eze with 10 goals, closely followed by Wilfried Zaha with 7 in all. Zaha is followed by Odsonne Edouard and Jordan Ayew, who had 5 and 4 goals respectively.
Chelsea and Crystal Palace have met on 63 occasions. The inaugural match between these two clubs took place in an FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round tie at Selhurst Park on 18th November 1906. Historically, the Blues have a superior record of 36 wins in comparison to Palace’s 12. There have been 15 draws over the years.
The most recent match between the Blues and the Eagles was on 15th January 2023, where Chelsea won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of a Kai Havertz goal midway through the second half (64’).
