Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea will go head to head with a Newcastle United side led by Head Coach Eddie Howe at Stamford Bridge. The Blues will be looking to secure a top four finish and a return to the Champions League, whilst the Magpies will have the sights set on qualifying for Europe’s most prestigious and famous competition for the second successive season.
Following the dismissal of Graham Potter in April 2023, Blues legend Frank Lampard was chosen to lead the club into the final few weeks of the Premier League season. Once the season came to an end, it did not take long for Mauricio Pochettino to be announced as Potter’s permanent successor at Chelsea.
Pochettino has had a very successful managerial career, with his biggest achievements whilst in charge of Spurs arguably being that 2nd place finish in the 2016/17 season before going on to reach the Champions League Final in 2019, where the Lilywhites were defeated 2-0 by Liverpool. After leaving Spurs, the Argentine joined French Champions Paris Saint-Germain where he won a number of trophies including a Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season.
Chelsea finished the 2022/23 Premier League season in 12th place with 44 points earned in their 38 matches. Whilst it was disappointing for the club to finish in mid-table, they did reach the Quarter Finals of the Champions League where they were defeated on aggregate by 14 time European Champions Real Madrid.
Out of the team’s 38 goals, Kai Havertz was the club’s leading scorer with 7 to his name. The German was closely followed by Raheem Sterling and João Félix, who scored 6 and 4 goals respectively.
Eddie Howe was announced as Steve Bruce’s successor at Newcastle United on 8th November 2021. In his first half-season with the Magpies, he led the club to an 11th place finish with 49 points to their name in the 2021/22 season. Howe’s side were one of the surprise packages last season, eventually going on to finish 4th with 71 points – this secured them Champions League football for the first time since the 2002/03 Premier League season.
Callum Wilson was Newcastle’s top goal scorer in the league with 18. Miguel Almirón was 2nd with 11 whilst summer signing Alexander Isak was third with 10 goals to his name.
Chelsea and Newcastle United have played against each other 173 times to date. The two clubs first met in the league in September 1907. Historically, it is Chelsea with the superior record of 78 wins in comparison to Newcastle’s 55. There have been 40 draws.
The most recent match between the Blues and the Magpies come on Sunday 28th May 2023, where the two teams drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Anthony Gordon gave the away side the lead early on (9’) before a Kieran Trippier own goal restored parity half way through the first half (27’).
