Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea take on a Newcastle United side led by their English Head Coach Eddie Howe at the iconic and historic Stamford Bridge, in the heart of West London, during the 2025/26 Premier League season.

A win for the Blues against the Magpies here could be significant, with them both being contenders for Champions League qualification this season. Not only that, but all three points provided by this victory would indeed put them one step closer to realising their ambitions to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the following season.

Current boss Liam Rosenior has been in charge of the Blues ever since he was appointed to be Enzo Maresca’s permanent successor in the Chelsea dugout at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 6th January 2026, signing a contract that will expire in 2032.

Rosenior had a great playing career that lasted as long as 16 years, which saw him play for a number of clubs, including Fulham (2003 – 2007), Reading (2007 – 2010), Hull City (2010 – 2015), and finally his last club, Brighton on the South Coast of England (2015 – 2018).

Then came the start of his promising managerial career. He began with Derby County as their Interim Head Coach following Wayne Rooney’s departure in June 2022. This came a few months before he ended up leaving himself ahead of the appointment of Rooney’s permanent successor at the club, Paul Warne.

Then came a spell in charge of his former club Hull City, who gave him his first opportunity to be First Team Head Coach on a permanent basis, joining them back in November 2022.

And, by the end of the 2022/23 season, they had risen up to 15th place with 58 points, well clear of the relegation zone after being guided away from danger by Rosenior.

Then in the 2023/24 season, despite securing and signing a new three year contract, and finishing with 70 points in 7th place, which was just a place below the play-offs. Despite a positive season, he was dismissed from his role.

French Club Strasbourg soon secured his services months later in July 2024, taking over from Patrick Vieira.

In his first and only full season with the Ligue 1 outfit, 2024/25 he led them to a very positive 7th place in the top flight of football in France, getting 57 points in the end to secure them qualification for the UEFA Conference League, only missing out on the Europa League on goal difference alone in the end.

Moving on to Newcastle United, their English Head Coach Eddie Howe has been in charge ever since he was appointed by the Magpies back on Monday 8^th November 2021. He secured them a UEFA Champions League spot with a 4th place finish in the 2022/23 season, earning a total of 71 points from 38 games. He then went on to win the club’s first major trophy in 56 years, beating Liverpool in the 2025 Carabao Cup Final.

It was a 2 – 1 win for Newcastle in the end, with Dan Burn (45’) and Alexander Isak (52’) who scored the goals for them, whilst Federico Chiesa was the only goal scorer for Arne Slot’s Reds deep in second half stoppage time (90+4’).

In the Premier League last season, they qualified for the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League again, in what was a second time since Howe took charge of the club back in 2021. It was a 5^th place finish for them last term with a total of 66 points to their name, securing them Champions League football on goal difference in the end, ahead of Aston Villa.

Overall, Chelsea and Newcastle United have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 180 occasions, and it is the Blues who do have the superior record of 81 victories compared with the total of 58 wins for the Magpies to date. There have also been 41 draws so far, as of the time of writing.
