The Blues of West London and Merseyside are set to go head to head when Chelsea play Everton at Stamford Bridge once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Following his appointment in May 2023, Mauricio Pochettino will have his sights set on a return to the top four for Chelsea this season, whereas Sean Dyche will aim for his Everton side to avoid relegation more comfortably this time around.
Pochettino became Graham Potter’s permanent successor following Frank Lampard’s stint as Chelsea Interim Head Coach. The Argentine had a successful spell with Southampton before joining Spurs, who he went on to manage for five years, getting to the 2019 Champions League Final and finishing 2nd in 2016/17, where they lost out on the title to Chelsea by 7 points. Pochettino then decided to take charge of PSG following his departure from Spurs, winning a plethora of silverware, including a Ligue 1 title in 2021/22.
Kai Havertz was Chelsea’s leading scorer last season with 7, closely followed by summer signing Raheem Sterling and João Félix, who found the net 6 and 4 times respectively. As a team, the Blues scored 38 goals in 38 matches over the course of last season.
After accumulating 44 points in the Premier League, the Blues had to settle for a 12th place finish. They did, however make it to the Quarter Final of the Champions League, where they lost against Real Madrid on aggregate. Chelsea were also impressive defensively last season, only conceding 47 times, the joint fourth lowest alongside Liverpool.
Following the dismissal of Frank Lampard on 23rd January 2023, Sean Dyche was finally confirmed as his successor at Goodison Park later that same month. The ex-Burnley boss managed to guide Everton to Premier League safety after a 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day of last season. Dyche also oversaw an impressive 1-0 victory against Arsenal at Goodison Park earlier on in his tenure.
Everton finished last season in 17th place with 36 points, 2 clear of the relegation zone. The Toffees’ top goal scorer was Dwight McNeil, who found the back of the net on 7 occasions. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray were 2nd and 3rd with 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
The inaugural league match between Chelsea and Everton took place on 26 October 1907 at Stamford Bridge, where it was Chelsea who won the game 2-1 in front of a 50,000-strong crowd. Jimmy Windridge scored both of the goals for the home side, whilst it was Tom Booth who got the only goal for the away side. Overall, the two clubs have met on 190 occasions to date, with Chelsea having the superior record of 75 wins in comparison to 59 for the Toffees. There have been 56 draws.
The most recent match to have taken place between Chelsea and Everton was played on 18th March 2023, which ended in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. João Félix (52’) and Kai Havertz (76’) scored for the home side, whilst it was Abdoulaye Doucouré (69’) and Ellis Simms (89’) who scored for Sean Dyche’s side.
