Goodison Park is set to host a match between Everton and Burnley in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Sean Dyche will be looking to get what would be an invaluable three points against his former club in an effort to guide the Toffees up the table and to put as much distance between themselves and the relegation zone as possible. Vincent Kompany’s Burnley will be looking to avoid an immediate return to the Championship this season.
With the club in 19th place, Everton decided that the time was right to end Frank Lampard’s time as Head Coach at the club before replacing him with Sean Dyche on 18th September 2022. Following some impressive victories, the Toffees finished in 17th place, securing their spot in the Premier League on the final day.
The result that got Dyche’s side over the line was a 1 – 0 success against Bournemouth at Goodison Park. Victory and safety were secured when Abdoulaye Doucouré emphatically found the back of the net (57’). The Toffees also secured impressive wins against Arsenal (1-0) and Brighton (5-1).
Dwight McNeil got seven goals in the Premier League last season, that made him Everton’s top scorer last season. Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray were not far behind the ex-Clarets forward, scoring 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Following Burnley’s relegation, Dyche was succeeded at Turf Moor by former Manchester City Captain Vincent Kompany ahead of the 2022/23 Championship season. The Clarets were the outstanding side in the second tier last term, winning the league title after accumulating 101 points in their 46 matches. They finished 10 points ahead of Sheffield United in 2nd place (91 points).
With 17 goals, Nathan Tella was Burnley’s top scorer on loan from Southampton in the Championship. Manuel Benson was just behind him with 12, whilst Jay Rodriguez got the third most goals for the club last term with ten goals.
Everton and Burnley met in a competitive league fixture for the first time on 17th November 1888 at Turf Moor. Overall, the two clubs have played against each other 120 times, with the Toffees having a superior record of 52 victories compared to the Clarets’ 38. There have been 30 draws between these two clubs.
Everton were beaten 3-2 in their most recent Premier League match against Burnley on 6th April 2022.
