Marco Silva’s Fulham are set to go toe to toe with Championship promotion contenders Middlesbrough, led by their Swedish Head Coach Kim Hellberg, at the historic Craven Cottage in the Third Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup. Victory in this tie in the heart of West London would take the Cottagers a step closer to the Final at Wembley Stadium in May 2026.
Starting with Premier League outfit Fulham, whilst they have never won the FA Cup yet in their extensive history, they have made it to the Final before, having done so on one occasion to date, all the way back in the 1974/75 season. In the 1975 FA Cup Final, they were coming up against fellow London side West Ham United, against whom they lost 2 – 0 in the end at Wembley.
In last season’s FA Cup (2024/25), Silva’s side did manage to make it all the way to the quarter-finals after getting the better of the likes of Watford (4 – 1), Wigan Athletic (2 – 1), and Manchester United (1 – 1 AET, won 4 – 3 on penalties). They lost 3 – 0 to Crystal Palace in the end to exit the competition last term.
Fulham’s leading goal scorer in the FA Cup in the 2024/25 campaign was Rodrigo Muniz, who scored 3 times – once in the comfortable win against Watford in the Third Round, and once in the tie against Wigan.
We now move on to Middlesbrough, who are of course amongst the leading contenders to earn promotion back to the Premier League this season under new boss Kim Hellberg, who took over following the departure of former boss Rob Edwards for Wolves.
Boro have also never won the FA Cup, and they too have reached an FA Cup Final, doing so for what is currently the only occasion back in the 1996/97 season where they lost 2 – 0 to Chelsea following goals from the likes of Roberto Di Matteo (1’) and Eddie Newton (83’) in the first and second half respectively.
In last season’s FA Cup, the second tier side didn’t manage to make it beyond the Third Round, losing narrowly 1 – 0 at the Riverside against their fellow EFL Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers, who scored the winning goal through Andreas Weimann in the second half (70’).
This will be the first time that Fulham and Middlesbrough have ever met in the history of the FA Cup. The last time that they met in a competitive fixture was in the EFL Championship back on Wednesday, 6th April 2022 at the Riverside Stadium, where Fulham would win 1 – 0 thanks to a goal from Cottagers club favourite Aleksandar Mitrovic late on in the second half (73’).
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Third Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Craven Cottage, with the Cottagers looking to win some prestigious silverware this season.
