Liverpool, who are currently led by their Dutch Head Coach Arne Slot, are going to go toe to toe with a fellow Premier League side in the form of Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton at the iconic Anfield in the Fourth Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup. The Reds will be looking to take a step closer to the final at Wembley in May 2026 with victory here against the Seagulls.
As of the time of writing, Liverpool is one of the most successful sides in the history of the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, having won it on 8 occasions so far, joint with the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham. Only Manchester United (13) and Arsenal (14) have won it more than the Reds.
Starting with Liverpool, their maiden triumph in the FA Cup came back in 1965, which saw them successfully beat Leeds United 2 – 1 thanks to the goals of Roger Hunt (93’) and Ian St John (117’) after extra time, with Billy Bremner giving Don Revie’s Leeds the lead (100’) initially against Bill Shankly’s Reds.
Liverpool then followed this up with further triumphs in 1974 (3 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 1986 (3 – 1 vs. Everton), 1989 (3 – 2 vs. Everton), 1992 (2 – 0 vs. Sunderland), 2001 (2 – 1 vs. Arsenal), and in 2006 (3 – 1 on penalties vs. West Ham United).
Their most recent FA Cup triumph then came back in 2022 under Jurgen Klopp, with his Reds side beating Chelsea 6 – 5 on penalties after the game had ended in a 0 – 0 draw after extra time.
Moving on to Brighton, whilst they have never won the FA Cup in their history to date, they have indeed made it to the Final, doing so in 1983. In that year’s FA Cup Final at Wembley, they were beaten 4 – 0 by Manchester United in a replay thanks to the goals of Bryan Robson (25’, 44’), Norman Whiteside (30’), and Arnold Mühren (62’), who scored from the penalty spot.
They have also made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, doing so twice. The first was in 2019 when they lost 1 – 0 to Manchester City, before then losing 7 – 6 on penalties against Manchester United in the semi-final back in 2023.
The last time that these two clubs met in the FA Cup was when Liverpool faced Brighton in a 4th Round tie on 29th January 2023, when Liverpool lost 2 – 1.
The Reds did win their FA Cup clash before that though in what was the 5th Round tie back in February 2012 when they won 6 – 1 following the goals of Martin Skrtel (5’), Andy Carroll (57’), Steven Gerrard (71’), and Luis Suarez (85’), whilst there were own goals from Liam Bridcutt (44’) and Lewis Dunk (74’). The only goal of the game for the Seagulls came from Kazenga Lua Lua, who initially levelled the tie early on in the first half (17’).
In the Third Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup, Liverpool were comfortable 4 – 1 victors against League One outfit Barnsley at Anfield, winning thanks to the goals of Dominik Szoboszlai (9’), Jeremie Frimpong (36’), Florian Wirtz (84’), and Hugo Ekitike (90+4’), whilst it was Adam Phillips who was scorer of the only goal for the away side, who were led by former Barnsley and Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane (40’).
As for Brighton, they were 2 – 1 winners against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Third Round thanks to goals from Brajan Gruda (12’) and former United striker Danny Welbeck (64’). Benjamin Sesko scored the only goal of the game for the Red Devils on that day (85’).
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Fourth Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Anfield, with the Reds looking to win some more silverware this season.
