Liverpool and Chelsea are two of England and Europe’s biggest football clubs, and they will be coming face to face at Anfield once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Both clubs will have their sights set on a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds will also want to challenge for the Premier League title once more.
Jürgen Klopp took over at Liverpool almost a decade ago in October 2015, becoming Brendan Rodgers’ successor at the Reds. The German led Liverpool to its 6th Champions League/European Cup title in the 2018/19 season, beating Spurs 2-0 in the final, as well as guiding the club to a first-ever Premier League title the season after.
Other trophies that Klopp has won whilst in charge of Liverpool include 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Out of the Reds’ 75 goals scored in the Premier League, top scorer Mohamed Salah scored 19 times, with fellow forward Roberto Firmino just behind him with 11. Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo got 9 and 7 goals, respectively.
Liverpool’s goal tally was the 3rd best in the Premier League last term, with only Arsenal (88) and Champions Manchester City (94) scoring more than Klopp’s side. The Reds were also proficient in the defensive side of the game, only conceding 47 goals, the joint 4th best record with Chelsea.
Following Frank Lampard’s tenure as the Blues’ interim Head Coach, former Spurs and PSG Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino was announced in May 2023 as Graham Potter’s permanent successor at Stamford Bridge.
After a season at Southampton, the Argentine was appointed Spurs’ Head Coach. During his spell in North London, he led the Lilywhites to 2 3rd place finishes and one 2nd place finish in the 2016/17 season. Pochettino also got Tottenham to the Champions League Final in 2019, where they lost to Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool. At PSG, he won a number of trophies: the Coupe de France (2020/21), a Trophée des Champions (2020) and the Ligue 1 title in the 2021/22 season.
Chelsea had a disappointing season last term, finishing in 12th with 44 points after 38 matches. Their top scorer last season was Kai Havertz with 7, whilst Raheem Sterling and João Félix got 6 and 4 goals, respectively.
Liverpool and Chelsea’s maiden match was on 25th December 1907, and overall, they have met on 194 occasions to date. The Reds lead the way in terms of wins in this fixture with 84 wins in comparison to the Blues’ 65. There have been 45 draws in total at the time of writing.
