Liverpool ended last season with a 5th-place finish with 67 points, which saw them qualify for the UEFA Europa League. Following the final round of matches the Reds were only 4 points adrift of Newcastle United, who occupied the final Champions League spot in 4th place with 71 points to their name.
This top-six finish for Klopp’s side was secured following 10 wins and just 2 defeats in their final 15 games of the Premier League season, which saw them recover from what had been an inconsistent season up until February 2023. Liverpool only conceded 47 goals last season – the joint 4th best alongside Chelsea.
Not only were the Reds proficient in defence, they were also potent in attack. In 38 Premier League matches Liverpool scored 75 goals. This was the third-best record in the entire division, with only the top two, Arsenal (88) and Manchester City (94), getting more than the Anfield club. Mohamed Salah got 19 of his team’s goals last season, with Roberto Firmino second on the Liverpool scoring charts with 11 to his name.
Jürgen Klopp took over at Liverpool in October 2015, succeeding Brendan Rodgers. During his almost 10 years long stint with the club, the German Head Coach has won a plethora of major honours, which has earned him legendary status with Reds fans: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Jürgen Klopp received the honour of being awarded the freedom of the city of Liverpool for his achievements during his time with the Reds on 2nd November 2022.
Paul Heckingbottom took over at Sheffield United as interim Head Coach in the final weeks of the 2020/21 Premier League season, which saw the Blades get relegated to the Championship. Slaviša Jokanović went on to become Chris Wilder’s permanent successor before he was dismissed and replaced by Paul Heckingbottom in November 2021.
By the end of the 2021/22 Championship season, Heckingbottom led the Blades to a 5th-place finish before losing in the Play-Off Semi-Final against Nottingham Forest on aggregate over two legs. Last year, Sheffield United had an even better season, finishing in 2nd place with 91 points, gaining automatic promotion to the Premier League.
It was Cameroon international Iliman Ndiaye who was the leading goal scorer for the Blades last term with 14 goals. Scotland’s Oli McBurnie was close behind him with 13 goals in all.
Liverpool and Sheffield United came face to face for the very first time in a 2-2 league draw at Anfield on 6th October 1894. The most recent match to take place between these two clubs came on 28th February 2021, where Liverpool got a 2-0 Premier League win against the Blades at Bramall Lane. Goals came courtesy of Curtis Jones (48’) and a Kean Bryan own goal in the second half (65’).
