Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool will welcome Newcastle United to Anfield for the latest chapter in one of the Premier League’s most memorable fixtures.
Few meetings between the two sides are remembered more fondly than Liverpool’s dramatic 4-3 victory in April 1996, when Stan Collymore struck a stoppage-time winner in a match widely regarded as one of the greatest in Premier League history.
The result dealt a major blow to Newcastle’s title hopes, knocking Kevin Keegan’s side off the top of the table and allowing Manchester United to begin closing what had once been a 12-point gap at the summit.
The rivalry has been given a fresh edge in recent months following Alexander Isak’s record-breaking £125 million move from St James’ Park to Anfield. With emotions still running high on Tyneside, this is a fixture that promises plenty of intensity both on and off the pitch.

- Smart jeans
- Smart footwear

Liverpool head into the 2026/27 season with ambitions of winning their seventh UEFA Champions League and their second Premier League after a summer of change.
The Reds are set for an exciting year with a new era beckoning at Anfield following the appointment of Andoni Iraola as Head Coach. Following the departures of Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and former manager Arne Slot, Liverpool are expected to bring some exciting and young players to Merseyside to help them push for silverware.
Andoni Iraola arrives at Anfield with a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in European football. The Spaniard has taken a relatively unconventional route to the top, building his career step by step rather than moving straight into one of the continent’s biggest jobs.
After short spells with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus and Spanish side Mirandés, where he guided the club to a remarkable Copa del Rey semi-final, Iraola really began to attract attention at Rayo Vallecano. There, he won promotion to La Liga in his first season and established Rayo as one of Spain’s most entertaining and competitive teams, regularly punching above their weight against clubs with far greater resources.
His success in Spain earned him a move to Bournemouth in 2023. Although his side failed to win any of their opening nine Premier League matches, Bournemouth’s hierarchy remained patient and were rewarded for their faith.
In his first season, he guided the club to a record Premier League points tally, and over the following years continued to raise standards, helping Bournemouth achieve the best results in their history and establish themselves as a genuine force in the division.
The Reds finished 5th in last year’s Premier League, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League under Dutchman Arne Slot.
Liverpool have one of the most exciting strike forces in Europe, with record Premier League signing Alexander Isak set to partner Hugo Ekitike throughout the campaign, supported by the likes of Florian Wirtz and set-piece specialist Dominik Szoboszlai.
The former Premier League champions will be aiming to reclaim the League in the 2026/27 season and also look to add another Champions League trophy to their huge trophy cabinet at Anfield.
The Toon however suffered a much less successful campaign. After qualifying for the Champions League and beating Liverpool to lift the Carabao Cup in the 2024/25 season everything felt possible for the club.
Despite past success the Magpies failed to back it up last season with Eddie Howe leading his side to a 12th place finish in the Premier League and a heavy 7-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions league round of 16.
There were a few positives on Tyneside at least, with captain Bruno Guimarães once again showing his qualities alongside the likes of Lewis Hall and the unpredictable William Osula who popped up with some crucial goals throughout the campaign.
Newcastle have lost star forward Anthony Gordon after his move to Barcelona for a reported £70 million, with right-back Kieran Trippier also leaving St James’ Park after his contract expired.
Overall, Liverpool and Newcastle United have met in a competitive fixture 192 times, and it is the hosts who have a superior record of 96 wins compared with the Magpies’ record of 51 to date. There has also been a total of 45 draws between these two teams as well.
