Liverpool will go head to head with Newcastle United at Anfield once more at Anfield in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The two clubs have been amongst the most in-form teams in the league in recent times, and both will hold ambitions of Champions League qualification come the end of the campaign. Jürgen Klopp will also be looking for his Liverpool side to battle against the likes of Manchester City for the Premier League title.
In the most recent season, 2022/23, Liverpool had a rollercoaster season up until February 2023, where they went on to win 10 of their last 15 Premier League matches, drawing three times and only losing on 2 occasions. This form in the latter half of the campaign meant that the Reds were able to accumulate 67 points which saw them finish in 5th place, qualifying for Europa League football.
Only Arsenal (88) and League Champions Manchester City (94) scored more than Liverpool’s 75 goals in the Premier League last season. The Reds’ leading goal scorer, Mohamed Salah, scored 19 of his team’s total goals in the league last term, with Roberto Firmino close behind him with 11 goals in all for the Brazilian.
Together with Chelsea, Liverpool conceded the joint 4th least amount of goals last season with just 47 in 38 matches.
Taking over in October 2015, Liverpool’s German Head Coach Jürgen Klopp has had a very successful tenure at Anfield, which is approaching 10 years at the time of writing. During his time with the club, Klopp has led Liverpool to a number of trophies over recent years including the Reds’ first ever Premier League title in the 2019/20 season. Klopp’s side have also won 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
On 2nd November 2022, Jürgen Klopp was awarded the freedom of the city of Liverpool in recognition of his success with the Reds.
Eddie Howe was announced as Steve Bruce’s successor at Newcastle United on 8th November 2021, early in the 2021/22 Premier League season. By the end of that campaign, Howe had led the Magpies to 11th place, 14 points clear of the bottom three. Last season saw Newcastle as one of the surprise packages, with the club ending the season securing 3rd place with 71 points whilst also ensuring a spot in the Champions League this season.
Callum Wilson was the Magpies’ top scorer last term with 18 goals followed by Paraguayan forward Miguel Almirón, who got 11 in all. Summer signing Alexander Isak and Joelinton got 6 and 4 goals in the Premier League respectively.
Liverpool and Newcastle United met for the very first time in a league match in November 1893 at Anfield – the Reds won 5-1 that day. Overall, the two clubs have met on 185 occasions with the Reds having the most wins in this fixture with 91 as opposed to the Magpies’ 50. There have been 44 draws in all at the time of writing.
The most recent match between these two clubs took place on 18th February 2023 when Liverpool beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Premier League at St. James’s Park. Darwin Núñez (10’) and Cody Gakpo (17’) scored within the first 20 minutes of the first half for the Reds that day.
