Two of England’s biggest and most prestigious clubs will go face each other at Anfield once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Liverpool and Spurs will be targeting a return to the top four and Champions League football come the end of the season. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds will also hope that his side can challenge for the Premier League title once again.
Jürgen Klopp has become a legendary figure at Liverpool, and this is unsurprising, given the success that the Anfield club have enjoyed during his nearly 10-year tenure in charge of the club. Over the years, Klopp has led the Reds to a plethora of trophies: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
The German Head Coach began his career as Head Coach all the way back in October 2015 when he succeeded Brendan Rodgers, who had recently been dismissed by the club. In his latest season with the club, Klopp’s side had to settle for a 5th place finish, accumulating 67 points which saw them 4 adrift of the Champions League places following the final day of the Premier League season.
Liverpool scored 75 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, with only Arsenal (88) and League Champions Manchester City (94) scoring more. They also had the joint 4th best defence with Chelsea, both conceding just 47 goals in all.
Mohamed Salah was the Reds’ top goal scorer in the Premier League last season with 19 goals, closely followed by fellow forward Roberto Firmino, who got 11. Darwin Núñez got 9 for the club, with Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota scoring 7 goals each.
Ange Postecoglu was named as Antonio Conte’s permanent successor at Spurs after Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason had both finished their respective stints as the Lilywhites’ Interim Head Coach in the final weeks of last season.
Postecoglu left Celtic to take the job at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and during his 2 years in charge at Celtic Park, the Australian Head Coach led the Bhoys to 5 trophies in all: 2 Scottish Premiership titles (2021/22 & 2022/23), 1 Scottish Cup (2022/23) and 2 Scottish League Cups (2021/22 & 2022/23).
Celtic, in their latest Scottish Premiership title campaign last season, scored 114 goals (21 best than Rangers, who were 2nd with 93) and had the best defence in the division, only conceding 34 goals. The Hoops accumulated 99 points last season.
Tottenham ended the 2022/23 Premier League season in 8th place with 60 points and was unfortunate to miss out on the Europa Conference League by 1 point even after being Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road in the final game of the season.
Harry Kane was unsurprisingly Spurs’ top scorer in the Premier League last term with 30 goals – only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland got more (36). Heung-Min Son came 2nd in the Lilywhites’ scoring charts with 10 goals to his name last term.
Liverpool and Spurs played each other for the first time in a league match all the way back in November 1909. Overall, the two Premier League giants have met 181 times, with Liverpool having the superior record of 89 wins in comparison to Spurs’ 48. There have been 44 draws in this fixture.
The most recent match to take place between these two clubs took place on 30th April 2023 at Anfield, where Liverpool secured a 4-3 Premier League win in what was an extraordinary match. Curtis Jones (3’), Luis Díaz (5’), Mohamed Salah (15’) and Diogo Jota (90+4’) scored for the Reds. As for the Lilywhites, Harry Kane (40’), Heung-Min Son (77’) and Richarlison (90+3’) all scored for the North London club.
