Manchester City, who are currently led by their Spanish Head Coach Pep Guardiola, are going to be going head to head with Niko Kovac’s Borussia Dortmund, who are also former European Champions. These two sides will be going head-to-head in the heart of Manchester at the Etihad Stadium during the League Phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League.
The Cityzens are amongst the clubs who are the favourites to go on and win this competition this term, and a victory against their German counterparts would see them take a step closer to doing so, and it would also be a significant result in City’s bid to finish in the top eight of this season’s League Phase. A top eight finish would, of course, see them automatically qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
City is a club that has plenty of European pedigree, and they are widely seen to have one of the best squads not only in Europe, but in the world. The club has only gotten stronger on the European stage ever since the appointment of current boss Pep Guardiola in 2016, who himself had already won the Champions League twice, doing so with FC Barcelona in the 2008/09 and 2010/11 seasons, beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United on both occasions.
Pep has also led the Cityzens to the Champions League title. They became European Champions for the first time in 2023. City beat Italian heavyweights Inter Milan 1–0 at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. The winning goal came from superb Spanish midfield maestro Rodri midway through the second half (68’).
During his time with the Manchester-based club, Guardiola has won many trophies. These include 6 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23 & 2023/24), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), and 4 Carabao Cup titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21). He has also won 3 FA Community Shield titles (2018, 2019 & 2024), 1 UEFA Super Cup (2023), and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2023).
Moving on to Borussia Dortmund, the German Giants are currently led by their Head Coach Niko Kovac. They qualified for the UEFA Champions League last season thanks to a 4th place finish in the German Bundesliga, after they were able to earn a grand total of 57 points from their 34 games.
As has been previously mentioned, BVB are also former European Champions, having lifted this trophy on one occasion, doing so back in the 1996/97 season. That year’s final saw them take on Italian Giants Juventus at the Olympiastadion in the German Capital of Munich.
It was a 3 – 1 victory for Dortmund in the end, who were able to score their goals through the likes of Karl-Heinz Riedle (29’, 34’) and Lars Ricken (71’). Meanwhile, the only goal scored for the Old Lady on that day was from the legendary Alessandro Del Piero (65’).
Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund last met at the Etihad Stadium in the UEFA Champions League in a Group Stage game back on Wednesday, 14th September 2022, on Matchday Two of that year’s competition.
It was a 2 – 1 victory in the end for hosts City, who were able to score their goals thanks to the efforts of John Stones (80’) and Erling Haaland (84’) after Dortmund had initially taken the lead earlier on in the second half through a goal from England midfielder Jude Bellingham (56’).
