Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are set to go head to head with a Bournemouth side led by Head Coach Gary O’Neil at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Cityzens will aim to become the first club in history to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Meanwhile, the Cherries will look to build on the momentum gained from last season and finish this term even further away from the relegation zone.
It was on 1st February 2016 that Pep Guardiola succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City Head Coach. The Cityzens ended the 2016/17 Premier League season in 3rd place with 78 points, securing Champions League football. At the time of writing Pep’s City have won a plethora of trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
The Spaniard’s tenure at City has of course been highly successful, and Guardiola has finally led the Cityzens to the club’s maiden UEFA Champions League win following a 1-0 win in the Final against Italian Giants Inter Milan in Istanbul. It was Rodri who got the winning goal with just over 20 minutes of the match remaining (68’). This triumph also completed what is a historic treble.
City secured a 3rd successive Premier League title last season, eventually coming out on top after an enthralling battle with Arsenal for the top spot. Guardiola’s Cityzens won the league with 89 points and 5 clear of the Gunners in 2nd place following 28 wins in 38 matches. City also scored the most goals in the league with 94 and they also had the joint best defence alongside Newcastle, only conceding 33 goals last term.
Erling Haaland was Manchester City’s leading goal scorer with 36 goals last season, which made him the top scorer in the league, winning him the golden boot. Phil Foden came second with 11, whilst World Cup Winner Julián Álvarez and Ilkay Gündogan got 9 and 8 goals respectively.
Following Scott Parker’s dismissal by Bournemouth following a poor start to the season, Gary O’Neil was appointed as an interim manager before becoming the permanent successor to Parker in November 2022. By the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season, O’Neil had managed to guide his Cherries side to a 15th place finish with 39 points and 5 above the drop.
Denmark’s Philip Billing was Bournemouth’s top scorer this season with 7 goals, and closely followed by Dominic Solanke, who got 6 goals. Jefferson Lerma (now with Crystal Palace) and summer signing Marcus Tavernier got 5 whilst forward Kieffer Moore got 4 goals in all.
Manchester City and Bournemouth first met competitively on 1st December 1987 where City got a 2-0 league win against the Cherries at Dean Court. The Cityzens have never been beaten by Bournemouth, having won 17 of their 19 meetings over the years. There have been just 2 draws in all.
The most recent match to take place between these two clubs took place on 25th February 2023 when City won 4-1 at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League. Julián Álvarez (15’), Erling Haaland (29’), Phil Foden (45’) and a Chris Mepham own goal (51’) ensured what was an emphatic victory for the away side. Jefferson Lerma (83’) got Bournemouth’s only goal of the game.
