Two of the most entertaining teams in the Premier League are set to meet once again when Manchester City face Brighton at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola will be looking to lead his City side to a historic 4th consecutive title, whereas Roberto De Zerbi will look to secure European football for the Seagulls once again at the end of this season.
Erling Haaland was not only his team’s top goal scorer last season with 36 goals, he also earned the Premier League golden boot. Phil Foden came second with 11, whilst Julián Álvarez and Ilkay Gündogan got 9 and 8 goals respectively. Overall, Manchester City scored the most goals in the league with 94 in 38 matches, 6 more than Arsenal, who got the next best goal tally of 88.
Together with Newcastle United, City had the joint best defence in the Premier League, only conceding 33 goals over the course of last season. The season ended with Manchester City beating Arsenal to the Premier League title after an intense and enthralling battle. This was the club’s third consecutive Premier League title.
City, under the stewardship of Head Coach Pep Guardiola, won their maiden UEFA Champions League title after a 1-0 victory against Italian giants Inter Milan in what was a hard fought and very intense final in Istanbul. This completed a historic treble for Pep’s team.
Over the course of his 7 year tenure with the club, Guardiola has continued winning trophies with every club he manages and the Spaniard has won more than 10 trophies with the club: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
Guardiola first took charge of Manchester City back on 1st February 2016 when he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium.
After Graham Potter decided to leave Brighton for Chelsea, Italian Head Coach Roberto De Zerbi was appointed as his replacement on 18th September 2022. He built on the foundations left by Potter and improved the Seagulls further, with the club finishing in 6th place, the highest league position in the club’s more than 120 year history. They also qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
Alexis Mac Allister (now with Liverpool) was Brighton’s top goal scorer last season with 10 goals, closely followed by Pascal Gross who got a total of 9 goals to his name. Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma and Leandro Trossard (now with Arsenal) all got 7 goals for the Seagulls last term.
