Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are set to take on Brentford in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will be going toe to toe with a Brentford side who are currently led by their Irish Head Coach, Keith Andrews, in the Quarter Finals of the Carabao Cup hosted at the iconic Etihad Stadium. The Cityzens will be looking to take yet another step closer to what would be a second consecutive final in this competition, and to do so, they will have to get the better of the Bees.
If City go on to win this season’s competition, it would be the ninth time that this club has done so – only Liverpool have won this trophy more, with 10 currently to their name, as of the time of writing. They have the opportunity to win their 9th League Cup trophy this season, which would of course see them sit just one behind the Reds in terms of all-time wins.
The maiden victory for Manchester City in this competition came back in 1970, when they were 2–1 winners against West Brom at the old Wembley Stadium after extra time – they won thanks to goals from the likes of Michael Doyle (60’) and Glyn Pardoe (102’). The only goal for the Baggies was through club legend Jeff Astle, who actually gave them the early lead (5’).
This was then followed by wins back in 1976 (2 – 1 vs. Newcastle United), 2014 (3 – 1 vs. Sunderland), 2016 (1 – 1, 3 – 1 on pens vs. Liverpool), 2018 (3 – 0 vs. Arsenal), 2019 (0 – 0, 4 – 3 on penalties vs. Chelsea), 2020 (2 – 1 vs. Aston Villa), and most recently in 2021, when they were able to beat Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 0, with the winning goal against Spurs being scored by the Spanish international central defender, Aymeric Laporte, late on in the second half (82’).
Pep Guardiola’s side entered the Carabao Cup this season in the third round stage, where they came up against League One Club Huddersfield Town away from home at the Terriers’ John Smith’s Stadium back in September 2025. They secured what was a comfortable 2–0 victory thanks to the goals of Phil Foden (18’) and Savinho (74’), with one goal in each half.
The draw for the fourth round saw the Cityzens come face to face with EFL Championship side Swansea City away from home at the Welsh Club’s Swansea.com Stadium. It was a 3 – 1 victory for City, who after going behind to the Swans thanks to Goncalo Franco just after ten minutes had gone (12’), the visiting Cityzens managed to turn things around, scoring their goals through the likes of Jeremy Doku (39’), Omar Marmoush (77’), and Rayan Cherki (90+4’).
Moving on to Brentford, they have never won the trophy, with their furthest in the League Cup being the semi-finals in the 2020/21 season. They were knocked out by fellow London club Chelsea, losing 2 – 0 following goals from Moussa Sissoko (12’) and Son Heung-Min at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back on 5th January 2021.
Keith Andrews’ Bees side entered this season’s Carabao Cup tournament at the Third Round stage as a Premier League club. Their first opponents were Aston Villa in the Third Round, whom they beat 4–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium. Aaron Hickey (57’) and Harvey Elliott (43’) were the goal scorers for their respective sides on that day.
Then in the fourth round, their most recent match in this competition saw them take on League Two outfit Grimsby Town at Blundell Park, with the Mariners having already previously beaten another Premier League side in the form of Manchester United 12 – 11 on penalties.
This time, against Brentford, the Mariners succumbed to an emphatic and thoroughly deserved 5 – 0 victory thanks to the goals of Mathias Jensen (22’), Keane Lewis-Potter (26’), Reiss Nelson (43’), Fabio Carvalho (54’ – Penalty), and Nathan Collins (75’).
Manchester City and Brentford have faced each other just twice, in a second-round tie over two legs back in 1989. It was City who won 5 – 3 on aggregate in the end to reach the next round of that year’s competition.
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this quarter-final tie in the 2025/26 Carabao Cup at the Etihad Stadium, with the Cityzens looking to win some more silverware this season.
