Fulham will be making a trip north to the Etihad Stadium to face Premier League and European Champions Manchester City in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s side will look to achieve history this season by winning a record fourth consecutive Premier League title this season. As for the Cottagers, Marco Silva’s team will want to build on last term and challenge for European football once again.
Last season (2022/23), Manchester City were very proficient at both ends of the pitch. Guardiola’s side and Newcastle United had the joint best defensive record in the entire division last term, conceding just 33 times in all. Going forward, City scored 94 goals in 38 matches – 5 more than Arsenal who got the next best goal tally of 88.
Erling Haaland had a stellar debut season in the Premier League, claiming the golden boot after scoring an incredible 36 goals which of course made him Manchester City’s leading goal scorer last season as well. Phil Foden came second with 11, whilst Julián Álvarez and Ilkay Gündogan got 9 and 8 goals respectively.
Manchester City were of course successful in their title bid last term despite Arsenal being at the summit of the league table for a period during the season. City ended with 89 points, 5 clear of Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.
The Premier League title formed one part of a treble – City also won the FA Cup and of course their maiden UEFA Champions League title after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the final in Istanbul. Spain’s Rodri scored the historic winning goal for Pep Guardiola’s side midway through the second half (68’).
Pep Guardiola is one of the most successful Head Coaches in the world of football and before joining Manchester City in February 2016, the Spaniard had won a plethora of trophies at FC Barcelona and German giants Bayern Munich. Fast forward to the present day and Guardiola has been in charge of the Cityzens for 7 years, winning a number of prestigious trophies: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
Marco Silva became Fulham’s Head Coach in July 2021, where he succeeded Scott Parker, who left for Bournemouth ahead of the 2021/22 season. Silva led a dominant Cottagers team to the Championship title that same season, winning 27 of their 46 matches whilst also amassing no less than 90 points. Last season, Silva’s side did challenge for Europe but ultimately finished 10th with 52 points and a very comfortable 18 points clear of the drop.
With 14 goals last term, it was Aleksandar Mitrovic who scored the most goals for Fulham, whilst it was Carlos Vinícius and Willian were joint 2nd, scoring 5 goals each. Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Andreas Pereira and Manor Solomon got 4 goals each.
Manchester City and Fulham met for the very first time in a competitive fixture on 22nd February 1908 in what was a 3rd Round FA Cup tie. 72 matches between the two clubs in total with City having the most wins with 39 as opposed to 17 for the Cottagers. There have been just 16 draws between the two teams to date.
The most recent match between these two clubs took place on 30th April 2023 at Craven Cottage, which saw Manchester City win 2-1 thanks to goals from an Erling Haaland penalty (3’) and a goal from World Cup Winner Julián Álvarez in the late stages of the first half (36’).
