City, led by Head Coach Pep Guardiola, will be looking for an unprecedented 4th successive top-flight title. Ange Postecoglu will aim to return Spurs to European football come the end of the season.
Pep Guardiola was chosen to be Manuel Pellegrini’s permanent successor at the Etihad Stadium in February 2016. The Spaniard has continued his great habit of winning trophies with the Cityzens, winning more than 10 as of the time of writing: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23).
Manchester City’s 1-0 win in the Champions League final against Inter Milan in Istanbul was the club’s maiden Champions League title win led by Guardiola who had won it on 2 previous occasions, which came with FC Barcelona in 2008/09 and 2010/11. This win also completed a treble for City.
Summer signing Erling Haaland scored 36 of Manchester City’s 94 goals in the Premier League last term, making him his club and league’s leading scorer. For the Cityzens, Phil Foden came second with 11 goals in all. Haaland’s closest competition for the Premier League golden boot was Spurs’ Harry Kane who got 30 goals.
City’s total of 94 goals was the best in the league with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal having the next best record of 88. Defensively, Pep Guardiola’s side were tremendous and together with Newcastle United, they had the joint best defensive record in the league after only conceding 33 goals in 38 matches.
After a long and intense battle with Arsenal, Manchester City eventually emerged as the Champions and led the Gunners by 5 points in all by the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season with 89 points compared to 84 for Arsenal.
Following Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason’s respective spells as Spurs’ interim Head Coach in the final weeks of the 2022/23 season, Ange Postecoglu chose to leave Scottish Champions Celtic to join the Lilywhites and to also become Antonio Conte’s permanent successor at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Postecoglu came to the club after another successful season in Glasgow. Overall, the Australian Head Coach won 5 trophies whilst with the Hoops: 2 Scottish Premiership titles (2021/22 & 2022/23), 1 Scottish Cup (2022/23) and 2 Scottish League Cups (2021/22 & 2022/23).
Celtic scored 114 goals (21 better than Rangers who were second with 93), whilst also having the best defensive record in the Scottish Premiership, only conceding 34 times. The Glasgow club also accumulating an incredible 99 points.
Spurs had to settle for an 8th place finish in the Premier League table with 60 points, missing out on Europa Conference League football by 1 point despite an emphatic 4-1 win away from home against Leeds United at Elland Road in their final match of the season.
As previously mentioned, Harry Kane scored the most goals for Spurs with 30 goals. Heung-Min Son came 2nd in the Lilywhites’ scoring charts with 10 goals.
Manchester City and Spurs met competitively for the very first time on 16th January 1909. Overall, the two clubs have met 168 times with both having recorded 66 wins in this fixture as of the time of writing. There have been just 36 draws between them.
The most recent match to have taken place between these two teams took place on 5th February 2023 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where the home side triumphed 1-0 thanks to a Harry Kane goal in the first half (15’).
