Manchester City, who are currently led by their Spanish Head Coach Pep Guardiola, are going toe to toe with current Carabao Cup holders Newcastle United in the Second Leg of their semi-final tie, which is set to take place at the iconic Etihad Stadium in February 2026. City will be hoping to emerge victorious on aggregate so that they can book their place in the Final at Wembley.
If the Cityzens do indeed go on to win this season’s competition, then it will be the ninth time that they have won it in their illustrious history – only Liverpool, who have lifted this trophy 10 times, have won it more.
The maiden win in this competition for Manchester City came in the 1969/70 season, which saw them beat West Bromwich Albion 2 – 1, thanks to the goals of Mike Doyle (60’) and Glyn Pardoe (102’). Albion’s only goal came from club icon Jeff Astle, who initially gave the Baggies the lead in this tie that was decided at extra time (5’).
City then followed this with further wins in 1975/76 (2 – 1 vs. Newcastle United), 2013/14 (3 – 1 vs. Sunderland), 2015/16 (3 – 1 on penalties vs. Liverpool), 2017/18 (3 – 0 vs. Arsenal), 2018/19 (4 – 3 on penalties vs. Chelsea), and 2019/20 (2 – 1 vs. Aston Villa).
The club most recently won it back in the 2020/21 campaign, when they were against Tottenham Hotspur, with them beating Spurs 1 – 0 at Wembley thanks to a winning goal from central defender Aymeric Laporte late on in the second half (82’).
Manchester City began their latest Carabao Cup campaign in the third round of the competition against League One Club Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium, winning 2 – 0 in Yorkshire thanks to the goals of Phil Foden (18’) and Savinho (74’) in either half of this game.
They then came up against Championship side Swansea City away from home in Wales in the fourth round, and this too was a comfortable win for Guardiola’s side, who were 3 – 1 winners following goals from the likes of Jeremy Doku (39’), Omar Marmoush (77’), and Rayan Cherki (90+4’).
Then came the most recent round, the Quarter Finals, where City were drawn against fellow Premier League side Brentford, led by Keith Andrews, at the Etihad Stadium. They were able to win comfortably 2 – 0 after the aforementioned Rayan Cherki (32’) and Savinho (67’) found the back of the net either side of the half-time break.
Moving on to Newcastle United, they have lifted this trophy precisely on one occasion, which was last season when they were able to beat Liverpool 2 – 1 at Wembley Stadium thanks to the goals of Dan Burn (45’) and Alexander Isak (52’), with Federico Chiesa scoring the only goal for the Reds deep into the stoppage time in the second half (90+4’). It was the club’s first trophy win in more than 50 years, secured under the stewardship of current boss Eddie Howe at Wembley Stadium.
The Magpies have been runners-up in this competition on two occasions, first in the 1975/76 season losing to Manchester City, and then in 2022/23 they finished as runners-up after losing narrowly 2 – 0 against Manchester United following goals from Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’), whose goals came in very quick succession in the first half.
In their 2025/26 Carabao Cup campaign, Howe’s Newcastle began in the Third Round against League One outfit Bradford City at St. James’s Park, winning emphatically 4 – 1 following the goals of Joelinton (17’, 75’) and William Osula (19’, 87’) – Andy Cook scored the only goal for the visiting Bantams side in that game in the second half (79’).
Then in the fourth round, Eddie Howe’s side came up against Thomas Frank’s Spurs, also at St. James’s Park in the North East. It was a deserved 2 – 0 triumph after both Fabian Schär (24’) and Nick Woltemade (50’) found the back of the net against their North London counterparts.
Fulham were their latest opponents in the Carabao Cup in 2025/26, facing Marco Silva’s side in the Quarter Finals at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies were 2 – 1 winners through goals from Yoane Wissa (10’) and Lewis Miley (90+2’), with the latter scoring the winning goal late on in the game in what was stoppage time in the second half following Sasa Lukic’s equaliser for Fulham shortly after the hosts’ opening goal of this game (16’).
All eyes will be on who will emerge victorious from this tie following the second leg of this semi-final tie in the 2025/26 Carabao Cup at the aforementioned Etihad Stadium, with the Cityzens looking to win some more silverware this season.
