The Etihad Stadium will stage yet another enthralling battle between two of England and Europe’s most prestigious clubs when Manchester City and Liverpool go head to head in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Pep Guardiola’s side will look to achieve their goal of a fourth consecutive Premier League title, although Liverpool, under the stewardship of Head Coach Jürgen Klopp, will look to win the title race themselves.
Pep Guardiola already had a reputation for winning trophies from his time with FC Barcelona and German heavyweights Bayern Munich and when he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City in February 2016. City fans were most certainly not let down with Guardiola leading the club to a plethora of major trophies to date: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21) and 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019).
Guardiola and City won the treble last season, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the club’s maiden UEFA Champions League win when they got the better of Inter Milan who they beat 1-0 in the final in Istanbul. Midfielder Rodri got the historic winning goal for the Cityzens midway through the second half (68’).
By accumulating 89 points and winning 28 of their 38 Premier League matches, Manchester City won the Premier League title 5 points ahead of Arsenal, who they had been battling for top spot for much of the season. They were defensively strong, conceding 33 goals – the joint best record alongside Newcastle United.
City were not only proficient defensively, they were also as ruthless as ever in front of goal. They scored 94 goals, the most in the division and no less than 6 more than the next best goal tally of 88, held by runners-up Arsenal. Erling Haaland scored 36 of these goals with Phil Foden second in City’s goal scoring charts with 11 to his name.
Jürgen Klopp succeeded Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool in October 2015. The German Head Coach has become a legendary figure at Anfield and he has won a plethora of trophies, including the Reds’ maiden Premier League title in the 2019/20 season. In his almost decade long tenure on Merseyside, Klopp has also led the club to win one Champions League title (2018/19), an FA Cup (2021/22), a UEFA Super Cup (2019) as well as an EFL Cup in the 2021/22 season.
Klopp’s Reds finished 5th in the Premier League last season with 67 points and 4 off Newcastle United who occupied the final Champions League spot in 4th place. Mohamed Salah was Liverpool’s leading goal scorer last term with 19 goals, whilst Roberto Firmino came second for the Reds with 11 in total to his name. Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez got 9 goals whilst Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota got 7 goals each.
The 2018/19 season saw Liverpool lose out to Manchester City by 1 point despite amassing a total of 97 points. Then, in the 2021/22 season, City won the Premier League with 93 points, just one ahead of Liverpool in what was yet another enthralling race for the title.
Manchester City and Liverpool first met all the way back in a league match on 16th September 1893. Overall, the two clubs have played each other 224 times with the Reds having the most wins in this fixture with 108 as opposed to the Cityzens’ 60. There have been just 56 draws.
The most recent match between these two English and European heavyweights took place on 1st April 2023 at the Etihad Stadium where Manchester City got an emphatic 4-1 win in the Premier League. Julián Álvarez (27’), Kevin De Bruyne (46’), İlkay Gündoğan (53’) and Jack Grealish (74’) all scored for the home side that day. Mohamed Salah got Liverpool’s only goal of the game (17’).
