Manchester United, who are currently led by their Portuguese Head Coach Ruben Amorim, are going toe to toe with a fellow top-flight outfit in the form of Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton at the iconic and historic Old Trafford in the Third Round of the 2025/26 FA Cup. A victory here will take them a step closer to the Final at Wembley Stadium in May 2026.
The Red Devils have an extensive history in the FA Cup, having lifted this famous trophy on as many as 13 times, with only Arsenal having won it more, with 14 to their name.
We start with United – their first triumph came back in 1909, when they were 1 – 0 winners against Bristol City, before further wins arrived in 1948 (4 – 2 vs. Blackpool), 1963 (3 – 1 vs. Leicester City), 1977 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1983 (4 – 0 vs. Brighton), 1985 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), and in 1990 (1 – 0 vs. Crystal Palace).
Manchester United’s eighth FA Cup Final victory then arrived in 1994 with an emphatic 4 – 0 triumph over Chelsea, thanks to the goals of the likes of Eric Cantona (61’ – Pen, 67’ – Pen), Mark Hughes (69’), and Brian McClair (90+3’). The 1996 Final then saw Cantona score the winning goal in a 1 – 0 triumph against fierce rivals at Wembley late on in the second half in dramatic style (85’).
FA Cup win number ten for United then arrived in 1999 with a 2–0 victory against Newcastle United, courtesy of goals from Teddy Sheringham (11’) and Paul Scholes (53’). Then in 2004, Millwall were beaten 3 – 0 at Wembley through the goals of Cristiano Ronaldo (44’) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (65’ – Pen, 81’)
The final in 2016 saw Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 2 – 1, coming from one goal behind to come away with the trophy thanks to goals from Juan Mata (81’) and Jesse Lingard (110’) after extra time. Jason Puncheon was the player to give the Eagles an initial lead at Wembley (78’).
Manchester United’s most recent win in an FA Cup Final came back in 2024 when they were able to beat their cross-city rivals Manchester City 2 – 1 thanks to the goals of Alejandro Garnacho (30’) and Kobbie Mainoo (39’). City did pull a goal back through Jeremy Doku late on in the second half in this game (87’).
Moving on to Brighton, whilst they have never won the FA Cup, they have made the final, doing so back in the 1982/83 season, where they suffered a 4 – 0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in a replay thanks to the goals of Bryan Robson (25’, 44’), Norman Whiteside (30’), and Arnold Mühren, who scored from the penalty spot (62’).
To get to Wembley, the Seagulls got the better of the likes of Newcastle United (1 – 0, Replay – Third Round), Manchester City (4 – 0, Fourth Round), Liverpool (2 – 1, Fifth Round), Norwich City (1 – 0, Quarter Final), and Sheffield Wednesday (2 – 1, Semi Final).
Manchester United and Brighton have met a number of times in the FA Cup over the years, most recently at Wembley in their semi-final tie on Sunday, 23rd April 2023. It was a 0 – 0 draw that led to a 7 – 6 win on penalties for United, with the likes of Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Marcel Sabitzer, Wout Weghorst, and Victor Lindelöf all scoring from the spot.
For Brighton, their six successful penalty kicks were scored by Alexis Mac Allister, Pascal Gross, Deniz Undav, Pervis Estupiñán, Lewis Dunk, and Adam Webster. It was Solly March who missed the spot kick for the Seagulls that day.
United also won their FA Cup encounter before that. It was a quarter-final tie that took place 5 years before that semi-final on Saturday, 17th March 2018 at Old Trafford, where the hosts were comfortable and deserved 2 – 0 winners. The Red Devils scored through the likes of Romelu Lukaku (37’) and Nemanja Matić (83’).
All eyes will be on who will be victorious in this Third Round tie in the 2025/26 FA Cup at the aforementioned Old Trafford, with the Red Devils looking to win some more prestigious silverware this season. If they win the 2026 FA Cup Final, United will move level with Arsenal as the joint most successful club in the competition’s history.
