These two sides will meet in the English Capital in March 2026.
Spurs will, of course, be looking to emerge victorious from this two-legged tie against Simeone’s Atleti as they look to advance as far as possible in this season’s competition, and victory over their La Liga opponents would be recognised as a statement triumph.
In the League Phase, Tudor’s Tottenham were excellent, with the Lilywhites finishing within the top eight in 4th place with 17 points after their 8 games. They got 5 wins overall, which saw them get the better of the likes of Spain’s Villarreal (1 – 0), Denmark’s Copenhagen (4 – 0), Czech Republic’s Slavia Praha (3 – 0), as well as Germany’s Borussia Dortmund (2 – 0) and Eintracht Frankfurt (2 – 0).
This top-eight finish meant that Tottenham had automatically advanced to the Round of 16, avoiding the knockout play-off round.
Moving on to Spurs’ Round of 16 opponents, Atletico Madrid, Diego Simeone’s side had to settle for a knockout play-off place after they ended up with a 14th-place finish in the league phase. Their 4 wins came against Eintracht Frankfurt (5 – 1), Belgium’s Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (3 – 1), Italy’s Inter Milan (2 – 1), and finally the Netherlands’ PSV Eindhoven (3 – 2).
Then, in the play-off round, Atletico faced another Belgian side, Club Brugge, over two legs. They drew 3 – 3 away from home in the first leg before an emphatic 4 – 1 triumph at the Estadio Metropolitano ensured a 7 – 4 aggregate win for Atletico Madrid overall.
This season’s Round of 16 tie will be the first time that Spurs and Atleti have met in the Champions League.
