West Ham United, who are currently led by English Head Coach Graham Potter, are set to come face to face with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side at the iconic London Stadium, which is located in the heart of East London. This is a game that will take place during the highly anticipated 2025/26 Premier League season.
A win for the Hammers against their West Midlands opponents would see them take an important step closer to realising their ambitions for the current campaign, which are to secure a top-half finish in the league, while potentially pushing for European Football this term.
The current Head Coach of West Ham United Football Club is, of course, Graham Potter, who has been in charge of the Hammers ever since the ex-Swansea City, Brighton, and Chelsea boss was announced as the club’s latest managerial appointment to replace Julen Lopetegui in the West Ham hotseat back on Thursday, 9th January 2025.
Potter’s first few months in charge saw him tasked with leading them away from the relegation zone, which is something that he was able to accomplish comfortably, with the Hammers ending up with what was a respectable 14th place finish in the league table, after they were able to accumulate a total of 43 points from their 38 top flight matches overall.
West Ham did indeed manage to end the 2024/25 campaign on a high, having faced Ipswich Town, led by Kieran McKenna, away from home at Portman Road on the final day of last season. The visitors won comfortably, beating the Tractor Boys 3 – 1 thanks to goals from the likes of James Ward-Prowse (43’), Jarrod Bowen (55’), and Mohammed Kudus (87’), meanwhile it was Wales international forward Nathan Broadhead who would score the only goal for the hosts on that particular afternoon (52’).
Moving on to Aston Villa, their Spanish Head Coach, Unai Emery, has been in charge of the West Midlands Club since he took over from his predecessor, Steven Gerrard, on Tuesday, 1st November 2022, just days after his appointment was confirmed on Monday, 24th October 2022.
They qualified for the UEFA Champions League in the 2023/24 season with a 4th-place finish, earning a total of 68 points from their 38 matches. They would reach the Quarter Finals of the 2024/25 Champions League, being narrowly knocked out of the competition 4–3 on aggregate by the eventual winners, Paris Saint-Germain, across the two legs.
In the league, they narrowly missed out on reaching the Champions League for the second consecutive season, but they had to settle for a 6th place finish with 66 points, missing out on a place in this highly prestigious competition on goal difference alone in the end. They qualified for the 2025/26 edition of the still prestigious UEFA Europa League instead.
The last time these two clubs met in a competitive match in all competitions was in the Premier League on Sunday, 26th January 2025, at Villa Park, resulting in a 1–1 draw. This was a competitive game between the two clubs in the B6 division. There were goals from the likes of Jacob Ramsey (8’) and Emerson (70’) for their respective clubs in the end.
Overall, West Ham United and Aston Villa have met competitively in all competitions on at least 123 occasions, and it is the Hammers who have a superior record of 45 wins in this fixture, just ahead of the Villans with 41 victories against the East London-based club over the years. There have also been as many as 37 draws between these two clubs to date, as of the time of writing.
