West Ham and Aston Villa are set to come face to face at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. David Moyes’ Hammers will look to use the momentum gained from their Europa Conference win to not only finish higher in the league but also to get as far as possible in this season’s Europa League. As for Unai Emery’s Villans, they will be looking to emulate the Hammers’ exploits in the Europa Conference League whilst also trying to finish in the Premier League’s top seven for the second successive season.
Last season, West Ham United finished in 14th place with 40 points, with a comfortable margin of 6 points separating them and the bottom three. It was a positive end to the 2023/24 season for David Moyes’ side, who went on to win the Europa Conference League in Prague after beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1 courtesy of goals from Saïd Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’). It was midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura who got the only goal for I Viola (67’). This was the club’s first European trophy win since the Hammers won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the joint top Premier League goal scorers for David Moyes’ West Ham United last season, both scoring 6 goals. Michail Antonio got 5 goals, whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got on the scoresheet 4 times each.
Hammers boss David Moyes is currently in his second stint as the club’s Head Coach, re-joining the club on 29th December 2019. The Scot succeeded Manuel Pellegrini at the London Stadium, with the club 17th in the Premier League table. It was a 16th-place finish by the end of the 2019/20 season before finishing 6th in the 2020/21 season – this was the highest position the club had ever finished, and it also secured them a place in the Europa League for the following season.
West Ham were knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage, losing 3-1 on aggregate against German side Eintracht Frankfurt. In the Premier League, they managed to secure European football again, finishing 7th to secure a spot in the Europa Conference League.
Following a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Fulham at Craven Cottage in October 2022 saw Steven Gerrard get dismissed as Aston Villa Head Coach, and he was promptly replaced by Unai Emery. Villa were very narrowly outside of the bottom three, but the Spaniard was able to guide the club to an extraordinary 7th-place finish, accumulating 61 points whilst also securing Europa Conference League football.
Ollie Watkins was Villa’s top scorer last season with 15 goals, with Danny Ings (now at West Ham), Jacob Ramey and Douglas Luiz all joint second with 6 goals each. Emiliano Buendía and Leon Bailey got 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
West Ham United and Aston Villa played competitively against each other for the first time ever on 1st February 1913 in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie at Villa Park. Out of their 118 meetings to date, the Hammers do have the superior record of 45 wins in comparison to the Villans’ 38. There have been 35 draws between these two clubs at the time of writing.
The most recent match between these two teams took place on 12th March 2023, with West Ham United and Aston Villa playing out a 1-1 draw in the Premier League at the London Stadium. Saïd Benrahma (26’ – Penalty) and Ollie Watkins (17’) scored for their respective teams.
