Brentford are set to take a short trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham United for the 2023/24 Premier League season. Both London clubs will hold ambitions of securing qualification for European football come the end of the season. The Hammers will be playing in the Europa League this season after winning the Europa Conference League in Prague, beating Italian side Fiorentina 2-1.
West Ham’s victory against Fiorentina handed them their first European title since the Hammers won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965, beating 1860 Munich 2-0 thanks to two goals coming courtesy of Alan Sealey (70’ & 72’). David Moyes led the Hammers to their Europa Conference League triumph, becoming only the second manager of West Ham United after Ron Greenwood to win a European trophy in almost 60 years.
David Moyes took charge of the Hammers for the second time in his managerial career on 29th December 2019, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini, who left the club sitting in 17th place. By the end of the 2019/20 Premier League season the club sat in 16th place with 39 points – 5 clear of the relegation zone. In the following season (2020/21), they accumulated 65 points in their 38 league matches to finish in 6th place, securing Europa League Football for the 2021/22 season.
West Ham managed to make it all the way to the Semi-Final of the UEFA Europa League where they lost to Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt. After a 7th place finish in the Premier League that term (2021/22), meaning that Moyes’ Hammers secured qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League. This season, they of course won the Europa Conference League Final, as well as securing a 14th place finish with 40 points to their name in all.
Following Dean Smith departure for Aston Villa, Thomas Frank took charge of Brentford as Head Coach back in 2018, and by the end of the 2018/19 season, the Bees finished 11th in the Championship table. In the following season (2019/20), Frank’s side made it to the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley thanks to a 3rd place finish. Unfortunately for Brentford, they lost 2-1 to Fulham in the final.
It was second time lucky for Thomas Frank’s Brentford side in the 2020/21 season, which saw the club finally gain promotion to the Premier League after a 2-0 victory under the arch against Swansea City in the Championship Play-Off Final. In their first ever Premier League season (2021/22) Frank’s Bees comfortably avoided relegation, finishing in 13th place, 11 points ahead of the relegation zone.
Last season, Brentford were in contention for European football for much of the season, only to narrowly miss out by finishing in 9th place with 59 points.
Brentford’s top scorer in the Premier League last season was Ivan Toney with 20 goals to his name. Bryan Mbeumo came 2nd in the club’s goal scoring charts with 9 goals, whilst Yoane Wissa and Denmark’s Mathias Jensen got 7 and 5 goals respectively.
West Ham United and Brentford met for the very first time in a competitive fixture on 24th September 1898 where the Hammers won 3-1 in the league. Out of their 53 meetings in all competitions, West Ham have the most wins with 23 in comparison to Brentford’s 19.
The most recent match between these two clubs took place at the GTech Community Stadium where Brentford secured a 2-0 Premier League win against West Ham.
