East and South London will collide when West Ham United and Crystal Palace come face to face at the London Stadium once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Hammers will look to re-establish themselves as a challenger for European football, whereas the Eagles will have their sights on a potential top-half finish in the Premier League.
In the 2022/23 season, David Moyes’ West Ham United team finished in 14th place with 40 points – a comfortable 6 points clear of the bottom three. Despite a slightly disappointing league season, the Hammers more than made up for it in Europe, winning the Europa Conference League Final in Prague, beating Italian Giants Fiorentina 2-1. Goals on the night came from Saïd Benrahma (62’ – Penalty) and Jarrod Bowen (90’).
This win in Europe was the first since winning the European Cup Winners Cup under the stewardship of then-manager Ron Greenwood on Monday, 19th May 1965. On that day, West Ham United were able to beat German side 1860 Munich 2-0 thanks to a brace from forward Alan Sealey (70’ & 72’).
In December 2019 and following the departure of Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes was appointed as First Team Manager for the second time, becoming the Chilean Head Coach’s permanent successor at the London Stadium. When Pellegrini left, the Hammers were in 17th place and Moyes managed to guide West Ham away from relegation finishing 16th and with a gap of 5 points separating themselves and relegation to the Championship.
Then, in the 2020/21 Premier League season, West Ham found themselves in 6th place with 65 points by the end of the campaign which saw them secure qualification for the Europa League for the following season. This was also the season where they recorded the highest league finish in the club’s more than 125 year history. They got to the semi-final stage where they lost 3-1 on aggregate in their two legged tie against German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt.
In the Premier League, Moyes’ Hammers finished in 7th place with 56 points by the end of the 2021/22 season, securing Europa Conference League football.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers last season with 6 goals each. Michail Antonio got 5 goals whilst Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá both got 4 goals.
Roy Hodgson was re-appointed as Crystal Palace Head Coach in march 2023 after the dismissal of Patrick Vieira. Hodgson took charge as interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2022/23 Premier League season. By the end of the campaign, the Eagles were sat in 11th place on 45 points – a very comfortable 11 points clear of relegation.
Eberechi Eze’s 10 goals that made him the Eagles’ leading goal scorer last term, just ahead of Wilfried Zaha and fellow forward Odsonne Édouard who scored 7 and 5 goals respectively.
West Ham United and Crystal Palace met competitively for the very first time on 29th September 1906 in a league fixture. Out of their 66 meetings as of the time of writing, the Hammers have won 25 times as opposed to the Eagles’ 18. The two clubs have drawn against each other on 23 occasions.
The two teams met most recently in the Premier League on 29th April 2023 at Selhurst Park where they lost 4-3 in a very enthralling match.
