North and East London are set to go head to head when West Ham United play Spurs at the London Stadium in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Both clubs will have ambitions of being in the race for European football, and three points here would be of significant help in either side reaching their target. Bragging rights will also be at stake in this London Derby.
Manuel Pellegrini was dismissed by West Ham after 18 months in charge, with the Hammers in 17th place with 19 points after 19 matches. The Chilean was succeeded by David Moyes a day later, on 29th December 2019. Moyes helped the club avoid relegation, finishing in 16th place at the end of the 2019/20 season, five clear of the drop.
Europa League football beckoned after West Ham finished in 6th place after accumulating 65 points in the 2020/21 season. The Hammers were also unfortunate to not qualify for the Champions League, finishing just 2 points off the top four.
The 2021/22 season saw the club finish in 7th place, securing Europa Conference League football. As for the Europa League, West Ham beat the likes of Olympique Lyonnais and Sevilla to reach the semi-final, where they lost 3-1 against Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt on aggregate over two legs.
It was a disappointing 14th place finish in the Premier League last season (2022/23), but David Moyes and West Ham made history by winning the 2023 Europa Conference League Final in Prague. Goals from a Saïd Benrahma penalty (62′) and a goal from Jarrod Bowen (90′) saw the Hammers secure a 2-1 win against Italy’s Fiorentina.
Saïd Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen were the club’s joint leading goal scorers in the Premier League last season, with six goals each. Michail Antonio scored five goals, while Declan Rice and Lucas Paquetá got four.
Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason had spells as Spurs’ Interim Head Coach for the final few weeks of the 2022/23 Premier League season following Antonio Conte’s dismissal in March 2023. The Lilywhites ended up in 8th place, and despite an emphatic 4-1 win against Leeds United on the final day at Elland Road, Aston Villa’s result against Brighton meant they took the last European spot ahead of Spurs.
Ange Postecoglu was named Conte’s permanent successor at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June 2023 following two successful seasons with Scottish heavyweights Celtic. Whilst in Glasgow, the Australian Head Coach won no less than five trophies: 2 Scottish Premiership titles (2021/22 & 2022/23), 1 Scottish Cup (2022/23) and 2 Scottish League Cups (2021/22 & 2022/23).
The Bhoys were the dominant force in the Scottish Premiership last season, winning 32 of their 38 matches while accumulating 99 points. They had the best defensive record, only conceding 34 times. They also had the best attacking record in the division, scoring 114 goals. The next best goalscoring record was held by their Old Firm rivals, Rangers, who scored 21 fewer goals.
Spurs’ leading Premier League goal scorer last season was Harry Kane, who got 30 goals, with only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scoring more (36). Heung-Min Son came second in Spurs’ league scoring charts with 11 goals.
West Ham United and Spurs met in a competitive fixture for the first time on 3rd September 1898, which is just one of their 221 meetings in all competitions. It is Spurs with a superior record of 101 wins compared to the Hammers’ 66. There have been 54 draws between these two clubs.
Spurs got the better of West Ham the last time they met in the league in February 2023. The Lilywhites won 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
