West Ham United, who are currently led by their English Head Coach Graham Potter, are set to welcome Regis Le Bris’ newly promoted Sunderland side at the iconic London Stadium, which is located in the heart of East London. This anticipated game is set to take place during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
If the Hammers indeed secure a victory in this game, they will take a vital step closer to realising their ambitions for the current campaign, which are to secure a top-half finish, while also potentially pushing for a place in Europe for the following season. They could qualify for European Football with a top seven finish.
Graham Potter is currently the Head Coach of West Ham, a position he has held since being chosen to succeed his Spanish counterpart, Julen Lopetegui, at the club. His appointment was officially confirmed on Thursday, 9th January 2025. This had followed spells with the likes of Östersund, Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Chelsea.
Over his first few months in charge at the club, Potter was initially tasked with guiding the Hammers away from danger and ensuring that West Ham climbs the table and finishes with a considerable amount of points above the bottom three. This was achieved, with them ending up with a 14th-place finish, having accumulated 43 points after 38 games had been played. This saw them avoid relegation by a margin of no less than 18 points in the end.
On the final day of last season (2024/25), the Hammers were indeed able to come out on top against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town to end the campaign on a high. It was a comfortable and well-deserved 3 – 1 triumph for West Ham in the end, with them scoring their goals through the likes of James Ward-Prowse (43’), Jarrod Bowen (55’), and Mohammed Kudus (87’). Meanwhile, the only goal for the Tractor Boys on that day was scored by their Welsh international forward Nathan Broadhead in the early stages of the second half (52’).
Moving on to Sunderland, their French Head Coach Regis Le Bris has been in charge of the Black Cats ever since he joined the club as Michael Beale’s replacement at the Stadium of Light back on Saturday 22nd June 2024.
The 2024/25 campaign was his first full season in charge, and throughout the EFL Championship season, they secured a 4th-place finish with a total of 76 points from 46 games, thereby qualifying for the play-offs. They secured a promotion to the Premier League with a 2 – 1 victory in the 2025 Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley against Sheffield United. This secured their return to the top flight after no less than 8 years away.
The last time these two clubs met in a competitive fixture in all competitions was in the Premier League on Saturday, 15th April 2017, at the Stadium of Light, resulting in a 2–2 stalemate. The goals for West Ham were scored by Andre Ayew (5’) and James Collins (47’), whereas Sunderland were able to score through the likes of Wahbi Khazri (26’) and Fabio Borini (90’).
Overall, West Ham United and Sunderland have met competitively in all competitions on at least 92 occasions, and it is the Hammers who currently hold the superior record, with 36 wins in this fixture compared to the 31 for the Black Cats over the years. There have also been as many as 25 draws between these two teams to date, as of the time of writing.
