Wolves, who are currently led by their Portuguese Head Coach Vitor Pereira, are set to take on Regis Le Bris’ newly promoted Sunderland side at the iconic and historic Molineux Stadium during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
A victory in this game for the Old Gold against their North East counterparts would not only see them gather fresh momentum, but it would also see them take a step closer to realising their ambitions for the current campaign, which is to secure a mid-table finish. They could also even push for a top-half place once the current season comes to a close in May 2026.
The aforementioned Vitor Pereira is, of course, the incumbent Head Coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, and he has been in charge of the West Midlands Club ever since his appointment was confirmed on Thursday, 19th December 2024. He came in as a replacement for his English predecessor, Gary O’Neil, in the Molineux dugout.
His first few months in charge saw him tasked with the challenge of retaining his new club’s status in the Premier League and putting as much distance as possible between themselves and the relegation zone. They were successful, finishing in 16th place after accumulating a total of 42 points from their 38 games, which provided safety and a substantial 17-point gap between themselves and danger.
The much-anticipated 2025/26 Premier League campaign, and this will be Vitor Pereira’s first full season in charge of the Old Gold.
Throughout his tenure so far, the Portuguese has led his team to several notable results, one of which was a thoroughly deserved 4–2 triumph over their North London counterparts, Spurs, whom they comfortably beat in this home game at Molineux. The goal scorers for the hosts on that day were the likes of Rayan Ait-Nouri (2’), Jorgen Strand Larsen (64’), and Matheus Cunha (86’), and there was also an own goal from Spurs defender Djed Spence late on in the first half, and just before the whistle was blown for half time (38’).
The goals for the visitors saw Tottenham’s forwards Mathys Tel (59’) and Richarlison (85’) score the goals for the Lilywhites in the second half of this game.
Moving on to Sunderland, their French Head Coach, Regis Le Bris, has been in charge of the North East club since his appointment was officially confirmed by the Black Cats on Saturday, 22nd June 2024, replacing his English predecessor, Michael Beale, at the Stadium of Light.
The 2024/25 EFL Championship campaign was indeed the Frenchman’s first full season in charge of the club, and he was able to eventually lead them to a long-awaited return to the Premier League following an almost 10 year absence from the top level of English Football following their relegation from it back in 2017.
Following a 4th place finish in the English Second Tier, following a 46 league game campaign that saw them end up with as many as 76 points to their name. They went on to get to the 2025 EFL Championship Play-Off Final, where, at the iconic and historic Wembley Stadium, they were able to beat Sheffield United, led by Chris Wilder, 2 – 1 under that famous arch thanks to goals from the likes of Eliezer Mayenda (76’) and Tom Watson (90+5’) in the latter stages of the second half. The Blades had initially opened the scoring thanks to a goal from ex-Stoke City forward Tyrese Campbell in the early stages of the first half (25’).
Overall, Wolves and Sunderland have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 122 occasions, and it is the Black Cats who currently have the superior record of as many as 49 victories in this fixture, whilst there have been 41 wins so far for the Old Gold against their North West counterparts. There have also been 32 draws between these two clubs to date, as of the time of writing.
