2025 Community Shield: Match Preview
The traditional curtain raiser for the new Premier League campaign is almost here, and it will be either Arne Slot’s Liverpool or Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace who will be lifting the first piece of silverware of the season.
The 2025/26 Premier League season is almost upon us, with it set to get underway on Friday 15th August 2025 when reigning Champions Liverpool host Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side at Anfield in is going to be an 8pm kick off on Merseyside.
But before all the world class, enthralling action of the Premier League finally makes its return, there will of course be the traditional curtain raiser for any new top flight campaign – the FA Community Shield.
It is a one-off game that gives two clubs the chance to get their hands on some silverware, and it is, of course, the first trophy that can be won in any season.
The game will once again be held at Wembley, with the reigning Premier League Champions Liverpool, led by their Dutch Head Coach Arne Slot, going toe to toe with the 2025 FA Cup Winners Crystal Palace, with the two sides set to be led by their respective Head Coaches, Arne Slot and Oliver Glasner.
The 2025 FA Community Shield will be played in the heart of the English Capital on the afternoon of Sunday 10th August 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.
As previously mentioned, Liverpool secured a place in this showpiece occasion at Wembley after winning the title last season, having secured a grand total of no less than 84 points from their 38 matches, beating the runners-up Arsenal by a margin of 10 points in the end.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace were able to get the opportunity to compete for some early season silverware after they won the 2025 FA Cup Final, which saw them defeat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 1 – 0 thanks to a goal that came early on in the first half from England international Eberechi Eze (16’). This was Palace’s first ever major silverware in their almost 120 year history.
Both clubs have looked to add quality to their squads this summer, and they will be looking to improve even further in the coming weeks, with the deadline not until Monday 1st September 2025.
So far, the Eagles have completed deals for Dutch left back Borna Sosa and Argentinian Goalkeeper Walter Benitez, with them both joining Palace in South London from Ajax and PSV Eindhoven, respectively. They already have some excellent players in their squad, including the likes of Ismaila Sarr, Cheick Doucoure, Adam Wharton, Jean-Phillipe Mateta, and, of course, the aforementioned Eberechi Eze.
Moving on to Liverpool, they too, of course, already have a number of great players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo, Alisson, and Andy Robertson. They have so far added the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kirkez, and Hugo Ekitiké.
The last time that Liverpool and Crystal Palace met in a competitive game was, of course, in the Premier League back on Sunday 25th May 2025 in a contest that took place at Anfield. It was a 1 – 1 draw between these two clubs, with Mohamed Salah (84’) and the aforementioned Ismaila Sarr (9’) both scoring for their respective sides on that day.
Overall, these two clubs have come face to face on 66 occasions, and it is Liverpool who currently has a superior record of 37 victories compared with the Eagles’ total of 19. There have also been 14 draws between the Reds and the Eagles to date, as of the time of writing.
Manchester United is currently the club with the most Community Shield wins, with a total of 21. Liverpool are actually in third with 16, and they will have the chance to draw level with Arsenal on 17 should they get the better of Palace at Wembley.
Palace will be looking to win this particular trophy for the very first time by beating their Merseyside counterparts in the English Capital, as they also look to make even more history for the club under the stewardship of their Austrian Head Coach, Oliver Glasner.
